We were honored to host Inderpal Grewal, professor and chair in the Program in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Yale University, for a presentation in the Cottage on March 13th. Grewal is an influential feminist scholar who helped found the field of transnational feminist cultural studies.

In her latest book, Dr. Lorraine Bayard de Volo focuses on previously unexamined narratives of war, using gender as a category of analysis to describe both the historical place of women in war, and how gender plays into the tactics and cultural constructs of war.

100 years ago, Lucile Berkeley Buchanan became the first African American woman to earn a degree at CU Â鶹ӰԺ -- but she was not allowed to accept her diploma on stage with her classmates, and not included in the yearbook. Born in 1884 to former slaves Lavina and James Fenton Buchanan, Lucile earned her degree in German with a minor in English and became a teacher -- living to the age of 105, without ever receiving recognition of her academic achievements from CU Â鶹ӰԺ.

Specializing in the intersections between race and gender, the Women and Gender Studies department is proud to introduce assistant professor Kristie Soares, who joined our faculty in January. Soares explores issues of queerness in Caribbean and Latinx communities both through her research and work as a performance artist.

The Department of Women and Gender Studies is pleased to announce that Maisam Alomar will join our department faculty as an assistant professor in fall 2018. Alomar is currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of California, San Diego.

The Association for Feminist Anthropology has announced two winners for the 2017 Dissertation Award: Eliza Williamson (BA, 2009) and Meryleen Mena (Graduate Certificate, 2017).

As part of our Activist-in-Residence Program, we invited award-winning filmmaker and writer Paromita Vohra to campus to discuss her work as a documentarian, artist, digital activist, and the ways in which she makes media for social change.

We are excited to announce three new Associate Faculty members in Women and Gender Studies: Amanda Stevenson (Sociology), Kaifa Roland (Anthropology), and Joëlle Cruz (Communication).

Currently a visiting assistant professor of German at Skidmore College, Dr. Petra Watzke is a 2009 graduate of CU Â鶹ӰԺ, earning both the Graduate Certificate in Women and Gender Studies and a master’s degree in German Studies.

Katie (Christman) Huey graduated in 2011 with a major in sociology and a minor in women and gender studies. For the last three years, she has been writing a blog 52BeautifulThings.com about a search for ordinary beautiful things in an aching world.
