CU �鶹ӰԺ is aware that flyers were thrown off an interior balcony at Norlin Library on Friday, Dec. 13, at the same time that a “study in” was being held by the group �鶹ӰԺ Students for Justice in Palestine. The flyers called for an “immediate evacuation” of Norlin Library but also stated this was not a real evacuation notice, rather a simulation. Nonetheless, the flyers violated the university’s Campus Use of University Facilities policy on canvassing, and the CU �鶹ӰԺ Police Department is investigating in conjunction with the Division of Student Affairs.

Any information regarding this incident should be reported to CUPD by calling the non emergency line at 303-492-6666 and referencing Case No. 2024-2540.

All students are subject to adhering to the CU �鶹ӰԺ Student Code of Conduct. Any student found responsible for violating the Student Code of Conduct will be subject to appropriate sanctions.

CU �鶹ӰԺ has several robust processes for individuals to share concerns and request support, including several reporting options through CUPD, the Don't Ignore It website and anonymously through CU �鶹ӰԺ Safe2Tell. When concerns are reported, they are evaluated and addressed through tailored processes depending on the involved populations.

In the early morning hours of Nov. 1, several buildings on the CU �鶹ӰԺ campus were vandalized. The antisemitic messages contained in the vandalism violate the university’s policies on free expression and Campus Use of University Facilities, as well as Colorado law.

We are working as quickly as possible to remove the graffiti and proactively providing support resources to impacted groups on campus.

CU �鶹ӰԺ strongly condemns tactics and messages such as these, which target students, faculty and staff. This type of conduct is not a productive way to address the difficult conversations facing our society today in a respectful and civil manner.

If anyone affiliated with CU �鶹ӰԺ feels they are the target of discrimination or harassment, please reach out to the Office of Victim Assistance. For a full list of resources and information available to students, faculty and staff, please visit this resources page.

Conflicts, world events and controversial moments happen that impact people on our campus every semester. Rather than taking positions and issuing administrative statements, in these moments the campus will instead:

Encourage opportunities to process and learn through the academic expertise of our faculty
Provide direct outreach to affected student and employee groups with offers of support
Activate resources for mental health and wellness, dialogue and community-building needs

The CU �鶹ӰԺ administration may send communications and take positions on issues, incidents or other situations that affect core functions of the university.

CU �鶹ӰԺ has been working closely with our conference partners as well as the NCAA throughout the settlement negotiations in the pending antitrust cases. These are unprecedented times, and these decisions will have a seismic effect on the permanent landscape of collegiate athletics. While the settlement agreement is being finalized by the courts, which could take a significant amount of time, we will determine exactly how this will impact CU Athletics and, most importantly, our student athletes.

There are many questions that will be answered in the months to come, but every decision we make will be done transparently and in the best interest of our student athletes.

My thoughts are with the entire UCCS community following this morning’s tragic incident. I have reached out to Chancellor Sobanet to express our concern and offer our support. I understand how unsettling and horrific acts of campus violence can be, especially when they occur close to home. I encourage members of the CU community to take care of yourself and one another. Israel-Hamas war: Campus resources & insights

I want to recognize the Department of Ethnic Studies for its decision to remove its Oct. 22 online statement.

My heart continues to weigh heavy for all being impacted by this conflict. On Oct.11, we issued a statement decrying the horror of the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel. To the many who have constructively shared your anger, concern and perspectives with us, thank you for your engagement.

Our mission at CU �鶹ӰԺ is to educate students and spur innovation and research to have a positive impact on our society. This month, some of our students, faculty and staff have reported that they don’t feel safe and are in fear of being harassed and discriminated against. The university will continue to stand for academic freedom, free speech and nondiscrimination, but we will never condone or abide the direct or indirect endorsement of antisemitism, Islamophobia, violence, discrimination, racism or hatred in any form. Any instances of verbal, written, physical threats or racial harassment made towards members of the CU �鶹ӰԺ community should be reported to the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance and the CU Police Department.

Over the last several years, we have taken steps to facilitate an inclusive campus culture built upon the values of our Colorado Creed, but more work needs to be done. To date, we have issued additional guidance to academic administrators and stepped up security and outreach to affected student groups. Our webpage dedicated to this issue includes links to all this information and additional resources. My absolute expectation is that faculty in every department across campus will manage classroom discussions in manners that are respectful of all members of our student community.

The free exchange of ideas is difficult. How we express ourselves has the power to deepen our understanding of each other or to divide us. Moving forward, I encourage us to continue expressing ourselves, to listen openly to what others are saying, and to do so with care, empathy and lasting peace in mind.

The statement recently posted on the Department of Ethnic Studies website is not an official CU �鶹ӰԺ position on the Israel-Hamas War. The University of Colorado president and chancellors shared a joint leadership statement on Oct. 11.

The university will continue to stand for academic freedom, free speech and nondiscrimination, and we will never condone or abide the direct or indirect endorsement of antisemitism, Islamophobia, violence, discrimination, racism or hatred in any form. Productive discussion is at its core inclusive discussion, and any expression that aims to harass or demean others is antithetical to our values as an institution.

As world events unfold, it is the responsibility of institutions like ours to ensure the safety and belonging of every member of our community and engage and support discussions about emotionally charged topics in order to reach a better understanding of these complex and important issues.

I hope that as a university, we can embody the peaceful and thoughtful exchange of ideas that we wish for the rest of the world.

We at the �鶹ӰԺ are horrified and saddened by the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel that has sparked a war with the full breadth of consequences not yet known.

We stand against all acts of violence and human suffering, and recognize the profound effects of the crisis on people living in the region, as well as Israeli and Palestinian scholars and students here in Colorado and around the world.

As an institution of higher education, we will continue to promote free, open and thoughtful dialogue and academic expertise on this decades-old conflict.

For members of our community directly affected by this, we offer ongoing campus resources and outreach.
