The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ Sewall Residential Academic Program has selected professor Margaret Asirvatham of the chemistry department as its 1999 Sewall Teaching Fellow. The Teaching Fellowship will provide Asirvatham with monetary support to teach a course titled, "The Art and Science of Chemistry," to Sewall students next fall and spring semesters. She also will receive a stipend of $1,500.

A team of four undergraduate engineering students at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will test a satellite using micro-electromechanical systems, or MEMS, technology aboard NASA's KC-135 aircraft in March as part of the Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities Program.

The Sewall Residential Academic Program at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will host a lecture titled "Racial and Ethnic Coalitions in the 21st Century" on Monday, March 1. The lecture is free and open to the public and will be in Old Main Chapel at 7:30 p.m.

"Imagining and Remembering the West: Regional Identity and the Ghosts of Western Future and Past," a lecture by David Wrobel, associate professor of history at Widener University, will be held Thursday, March 4, at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ. The talk will be from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in room 235 of the University Memorial Center. The lecture is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Center of the American West, where Wrobel is a visiting fellow. For information call 303-492-4879.

Two of the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ's most distinguished alumni will give talks and a slide show on the seven highest mountains in the solar system March 4. The speakers, world renowned mountain climber Glenn Porzak and space scientist Joe Romig, will discuss the challenges of venturing to the summits of the solar system's highest peaks. The mountains range in height from 29,028-foot Mount Everest in the Himalayas to 75,000-foot Olympus Mons on Mars.

The ALTEC Language Lab at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ has begun developing foreign language lessons that about 2,500 students will be able to access via the World Wide Web in the fall 1999 semester, enhancing coursework in six foreign languages.

Kuan Yi Rose Chang, director of the Anderson Language Technology Center (ALTEC) at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ and an adjunct faculty member in East Asian languages and civilizations, will receive the Friend of Foreign Languages Award Feb. 25 from the Colorado Congress of Foreign Language Teachers. The award is one of six that will be presented to foreign language faculty and schoolteachers by CCFLT at its annual awards luncheon at the Adam's Mark Hotel, 1550 Court Place, in Denver.

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will present the annual Ralph L. Crosman Lecture on Monday, March 1, at 5:30 p.m. in Old Main Chapel. James E. O'Shea, deputy managing editor for news at the Chicago Tribune, is the guest speaker. The lecture is titled, "The Journalistic Boomerang: Reporters Face New Intimidation Tactics after the Food Lion Case."

Five finalists have been named for the position of dean of the College of Business and Administration at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, according to Phil DiStefano, vice chancellor for academic affairs. The finalists for the position are Michael Ginzberg, Case Western University; Randolph Beatty, Southern Methodist University; Robert Hansen, Dartmouth College; Steven Manaster, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; and James Henry, Michigan State University.
