Ross B. Corotis, dean of the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ's College of Engineering and Applied Science, has resigned from his position effective at the end of the current academic year, July 31, 2001, Vice Chancellor Phil DiStefano announced today.

Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will explore the red planet during "Mars Quest," Friday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the planetarium. The pre-recorded show examines the history of humankindÂ’s exploration of Mars, glancing in at the planet from space and exploring its surface. The show also delves into the question of life on Mars.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ tied for 26th in the 2000 ranking of the nationÂ’s top public four-year institutions in U.S. News & World ReportÂ’s annual Best Colleges issue, moving up from 31st in 1999. CU-Â鶹ӰԺ was tied with the Colorado School of Mines, Indiana University-Bloomington, the University of California-Santa Cruz, the University of Delaware, Virginia Tech and Miami University of Oxford, Ohio.

University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ researchers will test the effects of low gravity on two biomedical experiments aboard the upcoming flight of NASAÂ’s space shuttle Atlantis, now slated for liftoff Sept. 8 from Cape Kennedy, Fla. to the International Space Station.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ was chosen as one of the best colleges for Asian Pacific Americans in a recent college survey. The rankings appear in the August/September issue of aMedia's national publication, aMagazine: Inside Asian America.

The Housing Department at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will hold its annual Global Jam smorgasbord of culturally diverse foods on Thursday, Sept. 14, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Farrand Field. The special meal is meant to raise awareness about other cultures through ethnic entertainment and cuisine, according to Peggy Bonner, a CU-Â鶹ӰԺ residence hall director. This yearÂ’s menu will offer foods from Africa, Brazil, the European Alps and down-home Southern cooking.

A memorial service for Salvador Rodriguez del Pino, former professor of ethnic studies and Chicano studies at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, is set for 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, in Old Main Chapel. Immediately following the service, a remembrance potluck will be held at Koenig Alumni Center. Participants are asked to bring a main dish to serve six to eight people and a salad or dessert. Cooking facilities are not available. Beverages and utensils will be provided.

A number of safety improvements are in place at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ for the 2000-2001 school year and more are on the way. More than $300,000 in lighting improvements have been completed on the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ campus over the past year. Another $300,000 is expected to be spent on lighting projects this year in an ongoing effort to improve campus safety, according to Jim Fadenrecht, public safety director at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ.

University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ Professor Bruce Jakosky, an internationally known space scientist, will speak on the legacy of NASAÂ’s Apollo Program and the future of human planetary exploration on Sept. 7 in the Old Main Chapel.

Richard L. Byyny, chancellor of the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, has proposed that a new College of Information Science and Technology be created on the Â鶹ӰԺ campus. Byyny announced the appointment of a campus-wide committee to study the proposal at an annual faculty breakfast meeting last week. Bobby Schnabel, associate vice chancellor for campus technology, and Clayton Lewis, chair of the computer science department, will co-chair the exploratory committee.
