The University Memorial Center at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will be the site of the 2000 Fall Â鶹ӰԺ Campus Blood Drive. Open to the public, the blood drive will be held in the UMC West Ballroom from Oct. 30 through Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. CU-Â鶹ӰԺ staff, faculty and students interested in donating blood can sign up for appointments at a table outside the UMC Forum Room Oct. 23-27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or by calling (303) 492-5473 through Oct. 27 at noon. People also can donate blood without an appointment.

A $12 million University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ-built instrument package on the Cassini mission en route to Saturn has produced the first spectral images of Jupiter, including the planetÂ’s aurora and a gigantic glowing ring of gas encircling the planet. Launched in 1997, the joint NASA-European Space Agency Cassini spacecraft began making observations of Jupiter on Oct. 1. The CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph, or UVIS, has been taking images in the UV portion of the light spectrum invisible to the human eye.

University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ music students will present free recitals every Monday evening from Oct. 30 through Dec. 4 at The Academy, 970 Aurora Ave. in Â鶹ӰԺ. All six performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in the chapel and are free and open to the public. The recital series is sponsored by the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Office of Community Affairs and the College of Music. The recital schedule is: Oct. 30--Corey Rom, tuba; Nov. 6--Dan Leavitt, trumpet; Nov. 13--Hadley Low, viola; Nov. 20--Rebecca Berg, soprano; Nov. 27--Cate Hamlin, soprano; Dec. 4--Brooke Palmer, trumpet.

Editors: Photographers are welcome to attend the Navajo Nation Supreme Court visit on Monday, Oct. 23, in the Fleming Law building provided they do not disrupt the proceedings. The Native American Law Students Association at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ School of Law will host a session of the Navajo Supreme Court on Monday, Oct. 23, at 3 p.m. in the Lindsley Memorial Courtroom of the Fleming Law Building.

The Center of the American West at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will present two lectures by renowned nature writer Terry Tempest Williams on Nov. 2 in Denver and Nov. 3 on the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ campus. Both talks are free and open to the public. Williams, the center's 2000 Distinguished Lecturer, will speak on "Homework: The Art of Inhabitation," at 7 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Denver Public Library in room B2 of the Conference Center. Those attending should use the library's west entrance. Her talk is co-sponsored by the Denver Public Library.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ Outreach Committee and Office of Community Affairs are sponsoring "TeacherÂ’s Night" at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ for teachers and students in Â鶹ӰԺ Valley and St. Vrain Valley school districts to provide information about the wealth of outreach programs designed specifically for K-12 teachers and students. The program will be held Wednesday, Oct. 25, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the CU Museum of Natural History on the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ campus.

Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will explore the red planet during "Mars Quest," Friday, Oct. 27, at 7:30 p.m. at the planetarium. The pre-recorded show examines the history of humankindÂ’s exploration of Mars, glancing in at the planet from space and exploring its surface. The show also delves into the question of life on Mars.

More than 5,000 parents and families of CU-Â鶹ӰԺ students are expected to attend the annual Fall Parents Weekend to be held Oct. 27-29 on the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ campus. The event draws parents from around the United States and from several foreign countries. For the first time parents and families are able to register online over the Internet, which will account for approximately half of all registrations this year, according to Leasa Weimer, director of parent relations.

WHO: University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ student volunteers will assist Â鶹ӰԺ’s Community Food Share at MunsonÂ’s Farm, east of Â鶹ӰԺ. WHAT: A community service project for members of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, who will glean surplus pumpkins for Munson Farm to help feed needy residents in Â鶹ӰԺ County. WHEN: Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 8 a.m. WHERE: Corner of 75th Street and Valmont Road, MunsonÂ’s fresh vegetable stand.

David Hurst Thomas, curator of anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and one the nationÂ’s best-known archaeologists, will speak at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ Oct. 27 on his controversial book, "Skull Wars." Sponsored by the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ anthropology department and funded by a department alumnus, the Sixth Annual Distinguished Archaeology Lecture will be held at 8 p.m. in room 270 of the Hale Science Building. The free public event, which coincides with CU Parents Weekend, will be followed by a reception.
