Drought ravaged southern Colorado and the southwestern United States could see some early relief if the summer monsoon season begins earlier than normal, according to CU-Â鶹ӰԺ and NOAA scientist Klaus Wolter. "There is a hint that the monsoon might come early this year in the Four Corners region," said Wolter. "If you look further ahead into the future, the summer monsoon looks near normal for much of Colorado with maybe a hint of being wetter than normal on the Eastern Plains."

The Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ is accepting nominations for the Leeds Summit Award for Social Impact. The first of its kind in the nation, the Leeds Summit Awards program will recognize companies that use social initiatives to increase business performance. To be eligible for the Leeds Summit Award for Social Impact, candidates must be U.S.-based, publicly traded companies that demonstrate innovative and far-reaching impacts to employees, shareholders, customers and communities through corporate initiatives.

The many discoveries of the Galileo spacecraft in its journey through space and around Jupiter will be explored at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ's Fiske Planetarium on Friday, June 13, at 8 p.m. University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ Professor Fran Bagenal will present her live show "Galileo: Mission to Jupiter," as part of the planetarium's monthly astronomy talks. The live talks are given by CU-Â鶹ӰԺ professors and guest lecturers.

Facilities operators at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will conduct tests on steam boilers at the Williams Village housing complex June 9-13. The system is being tested to ensure provision of steam for the new student housing apartment complex, according to Derrick Watson, project coordinator. The procedure is expected to produce a large steam cloud and noise that will be noticeable to the surrounding community. The steam vapor contains distilled water, which poses no environmental hazard.

The CU Parents Association at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will host a series of orientation dinners for parents of incoming students in June and July at the University Club. The dinners coincide with orientation sessions for new freshmen and transfer students and will provide opportunities for new CU-Â鶹ӰԺ parents to become acquainted with the association's board members, the Office of Parent Relations and staff from student affairs programs and services.

Students at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ School of Journalism and Mass Communication are making their views on proposed media deregulation known to the Federal Communications Commission.

The Puksta Scholars Program has added three more University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ students to its group of young civic leaders. Joshua Lathan and Stefan Awad, both juniors, and freshman Alyssa Rezendes were chosen for their commitment to civic engagement, socially responsible citizenship, leadership and encouragement of positive social change, said Peter Simons, the Puksta Scholars Program coordinator.

Historian Patricia Limerick of the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ and former Colorado Gov. Richard Lamm will give a public lecture June 10 titled "What is a Patriot to Do? Can History Help Us in These Times?" The talk is part of the Reynolds Lecture Series presented at Chautauqua in collaboration with CU-Â鶹ӰԺ and will be held at 7 p.m. in the Chautauqua Auditorium at 900 Baseline Road in Â鶹ӰԺ. The event is free and open to the public.

The Vice Minister of Education for the People's Republic of China will visit the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ campus Wednesday as the United States and China embark on a joint Internet-based language education project with the help of a CU-Â鶹ӰԺ expert. Zhang Xinsheng will tour the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ campus and visit the university's Center for Spoken Language Research, the Anderson Language Technology Center and the College of Engineering's Integrated Teaching and Learning Lab.
