Musician and entrepreneur Kevin Woelfel has been appointed director of the Entrepreneurship Center for Music in the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ's College of Music. He succeeds interim Director Michael Millar. Woelfel's diverse career in the music industry has included performance, composition and manufacturing. He has held trumpet positions with many orchestras including the Chicago Lyric Opera, Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, Aspen Festival Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, Spokane Symphony, Grant Park Orchestra, Rhode Island Philharmonic and the Sacramento Symphony.

Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and author Vine Deloria Jr. will be among the featured readers during the seventh annual "Words to Stir the Soul: Readings from the American West" events presented by the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Center of the American West. Deloria will participate in the Â鶹ӰԺ event on Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Old Main Chapel on the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ campus. Hickenlooper will read as part of the Denver event on Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the LoDo Tattered Cover Book Store at 16th and Wyncoop streets.

Harrison Shull, former chancellor of the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, died July 28 in Monterey, Calif. He was 79. Shull, a distinguished scholar, educator and administrator, was appointed chancellor of CU-Â鶹ӰԺ in 1982 and held the position until stepping down in 1985. Later that year he became provost at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif. He retired in 1995.

Area residents are invited to observe the 40th anniversary of the civil rights march on Washington and Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech by attending a parade and commemorative events Aug. 28 at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ.

Law enforcement training and the belief among police in the United States that their lives are likely to be in danger at any moment encourages the use of deadly force in any potentially dangerous situation, according to CU-Â鶹ӰԺ sociology Professor AnnJanette Rosga. Rosga studies police use of force and the training of police in human rights-respecting practices in emerging democracies around the world, such as Bosnia-Herzegovina where she was a Fulbright Scholar in 2002.

Researchers at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will receive $1.8 million from NASA to compile an online database of the world's glaciers that combines historical records with measurements from the latest technologies in satellite remote sensing.

Before they begin classes, new students at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will participate in a variety of fun and information-packed activities starting Aug. 19. Fall semester classes start Aug. 25, and besides the usual array of orientation sessions to cover the details of class registration, policies and student services at each college, students will have chances to socialize and get acquainted with Â鶹ӰԺ during the week before school begins.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ's chief technologist has won one of the highest individual awards given by a national nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the use of technology in higher education. Kenneth J. Klingenstein received the EDUCAUSE Award for Leadership in Information Technologies recognizing his achievements in identifying and advancing technology directions for the various needs of higher education.

Robert Schnabel, associate vice chancellor for academic and campus technology at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, has been named chair of the board of trustees of the Universities Space Research Association, or USRA. USRA is a consortium of nearly 100 universities whose mission is to provide a bridge to cooperation among universities; with the U.S. government primarily through NASA; and with several other organizations to improve research and education in the space sciences. Most of the university members are from the United States.

A ceremony to mark the opening of Bear Creek Apartments at Williams Village, the new student housing complex at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, will be held Aug. 15 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Representatives from CU-Â鶹ӰԺ, the CU Foundation and American Campus Communities will kick off the event. A special tribute to the Williams family, which donated the land to the university in the early 1960s, also is planned. A ribbon-cutting and tours of the building will follow.
