University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ experts in earthquakes and tsunamis, the sociology of disasters, and the various cultures and politics of the Indian Ocean region will gather Jan. 26 for a free public symposium.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will host a free public symposium Jan. 31 in connection with the Denver Center Theatre Company's production of Sophocles' "Oedipus Rex." Associate Professor John Gibert, chair of the classics department at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ, will lead a discussion by a panel of theater and classics scholars in Norlin Library's Center for British and Irish Studies from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Gibert also will lead a symposium on Jan. 30 in the Denver Center's Stage Theatre from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Note to Editors: Contents embargoed until 1 p.m. EST on Wednesday, Jan. 19. New results from the Cassini mission indicate the spacecraft was pelted with sporadic bursts of interplanetary dust as it approached Saturn last year, according to a University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ space scientist.

What began with a farmer's discovery of some pottery sherds in 1953 led to one of the most extensive and detailed excavations of an ancient Pueblo Indian community in southwest Colorado. Now a group of University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ students and researchers are working to reorganize more than a million artifacts that were unearthed during the extended dig begun by the late CU-Â鶹ӰԺ archaeologist Joe Ben Wheat starting in 1954.

Ron Stump, vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, and Greek Adviser Laura Strohminger met last night with student fraternity leaders to discuss the university's future relationship with the Greek system, including plans to shift rush activities for freshman new members from the fall to the spring semester. A change in the timing of rush was included among several campus expectations and support programs for fraternities and sororities outlined by Stump and Strohminger.

Â鶹ӰԺ 20 events in music, theater, art, dance and photography will be used to explore the relationship between art and mathematics as part of the 2005 CU Year of Art and Math project. The project is the brainchild of mathematics Professor Carla Farsi of the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, who enlisted help from many other campus departments and outside organizations including the National Center for Atmospheric Research, the Â鶹ӰԺ Public Library and Studio Aiello.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ's Fiske Planetarium will present three different space shuttle tribute programs on Jan. 21, 27 and 28. On Friday, Jan. 21, Fiske will present the "History of the Space Shuttle," followed on Thursday, Jan. 27, by "Memories of Columbia" and on Friday, Jan. 28, by "Memories of Challenger." Each show begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be presented by Rob Morris, an astronomy educator at Fiske Planetarium.

A "multimedia groundbreaking" for CU-Â鶹ӰԺ's new $34 million ATLAS Center is set for Jan. 25 on the site of the former Hunter Science Building, northeast of the University Memorial Center at the center of the Â鶹ӰԺ campus. The groundbreaking begins at 12:30 p.m. and is open to the public.
