Susan Avery, interim vice chancellor for research and dean of the Graduate School at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, has been named interim provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs, pending approval by the CU Board of Regents. Interim Chancellor Phil DiStefano announced today that he plans to recommend Avery for the position at the next meeting of the Board of Regents on March 24. DiStefano had served as provost before being named to his current position following the resignation of former Chancellor Richard L. Byyny last December.

Three finalists have been named for the position of dean of the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ. The finalists are Gautam Kaul of the University of Michigan, David W. Stewart of the University of Southern California and Dennis A. Ahlburg of the University of Minnesota, according to William Kaempfer, chair of the search committee and vice provost and associate vice chancellor for budget and planning at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ. The committee's goal is to hire a new dean for the school effective July 1.

A group of 15 architectural engineering students at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ are planning to spend their spring break helping build homes for low-income families in Oakley, Calif. The project was arranged by the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ student chapter of the Architectural Engineering Institute as part of Habitat for Humanity's nationwide Collegiate Challenge program, which encourages college students to do community service by providing a list of local chapters looking for help. The students will be working with the Mt. Diablo chapter of Habitat for Humanity in Concord, Calif.

Five engineering students and a professor from the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will be part of a team returning to Rwanda over spring break to assist a village suffering from poverty, drought and unsafe drinking water.

The public can learn more about the Front Range's indigenous American Indian tribe, the Arapaho, thanks to a new Web site produced by students at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ that will be formally unveiled March 17. A presentation of "The Arapaho Project" and a panel discussion will begin at 7 p.m. in room 270 of the Hale Science Building. The event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Center of the American West and the Colorado Endowment for the Humanities.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ's physics department will continue its Saturday Physics Series with a March 19 presentation about the makeup of the universe 14 billion years ago. Physics Assistant Professor Jamie Nagle will present his talk on "Quark Gluon Plasmas," at 2 p.m. in Duane Physics room G1B30. The presentation is free and open to the public.

A specific date for release of the review related to CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Professor Ward Churchill has not been determined but it appears unlikely the report will be completed and released before March 14. CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Interim Chancellor Phil DiStefano and his administrative team are continuing their work to finalize the review related to Professor Churchill. The chancellor has said he will take the necessary time to conduct a fair and thorough review, even if it requires some additional time beyond his goal of the week of March 7.

Relief from one of the driest Februaries ever along the Front Range may be on the way as more snow and rain appears headed to Colorado, according to atmospheric scientist Klaus Wolter of the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Shifting weather patterns and the possibility of a re-emerging El Niño event indicate a better-than-normal chance for wet weather across much of Colorado in March, Wolter said.

CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Friends of the Libraries will present its spring "Treasures" event, "I Just Happened To Be ThereÂ… Making Music With the Stars," on Friday, March 18. Performing at 7 p.m. will be Nick Perito, longtime conductor, composer, arranger and accompanist for many of the world's most famous entertainers.
