CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Engineering Students Aid Afghan Boy Injured In Bombing

A 13-year-old boy who lost his arm during the Soviet bombing of Afghanistan more than a decade ago will soon regain a degree of function thanks to a team of CU-Â鶹ӰԺ engineering students who have built him a prosthetic arm. The boy was injured by shrapnel from a bomb that fell near his backyard when he was just 2 years old. He lost his entire right arm and part of his shoulder in the incident.

CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Closes Admissions For Fall Semester Freshmen

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will no longer accept applications from new freshmen for the fall term 2000, said Barbara Schneider, executive director of enrollment management for the campus. However, transfer student applications at this time will continue to be considered. A record number of applications has been received from both resident and non-resident students, and the freshman class may be as large as 4,917, up from 4,595 in l999.

Merrill Lynch Executive Presents International Business Lecture

J. Michael Giles, chairman of the Merrill Lynch International Banking Group, will present the Ben K. Miller Memorial International Business Lecture at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ on April 25. Giles will speak at 3:30 p.m. in room 100 of the Mathematics Building. The lecture is free and open to the public.

CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Awards Top Faculty, Staff, Students In Equity, Excellence

The Office of Diversity and Equity at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ has awarded seven faculty, staff and students the 2000 Equity and Excellence Award. The awardees will be honored at the 15th Annual Equity and Excellence Awards Banquet and Graduation Ceremony on Thursday, April 27, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the University Memorial Center Glenn Miller Ballroom.

CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Announces Winners Of High School Essay Contest

The University Writing Program at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ has announced the winners of the 2000 High School Essay Contest. Beth Peck of Montezuma-Cortez High School in Cortez won first prize, a $1,000 scholarship to CU-Â鶹ӰԺ, for her essay "Biblical Allusions in Robert BoltÂ’s ‘A Man for All Seasons.Â’ " David Feela, who was her sponsor, received the Benjamin and Jeanette Teaching Award of $250.

CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Professor Peter Michelson To Lecture On U.S.-American Indian Relations

CU-Â鶹ӰԺ English Professor Peter Michelson will use readings from his book "Pacific Plainsong" to illustrate the history of manifest destiny and the historical and moral implications of United States-American Indian relations on Thursday, May 4, at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ. Michelson's talk, "Pacific Plainsong, or Why Laramie's Diamond Horseshoe is a Chinese Restaurant," sponsored by the Center of the American West will be from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the University Memorial Center, room 235, and is free and open to the public.

NASA Archive Center At CU-Â鶹ӰԺ To Carry Terra Spacecraft Data

The National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will soon be distributing information collected by the Terra satellite, NASAÂ’s premier Earth Observing System spacecraft launched in December 1999. Terra is the first satellite to monitor how EarthÂ’s atmosphere, land, ocean, snow and ice cover, solar radiation and life influence the planet on a daily, global scale, according to NASA officials. Carrying five instruments, Terra is giving scientists a comprehensive view of Earth as a system and monitoring its long-term health.

CU Will Issue RFP For South Campus Land Use Study

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will issue within a month a request for proposal (RFP) seeking a consultant to prepare a conceptual land use assessment for CU-Â鶹ӰԺ South. Vice Chancellor for Administration Paul Tabolt made the announcement Friday following his appearance Thursday night before the City of Â鶹ӰԺ Planning Board, which removed from consideration a CU request for possible city annexation within three years.

CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Student Alumni Organization Announces 2000 Teaching Awards

CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Law School Establishes Entrepreneurial Law Center

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ School of Law today announced the formation of the Entrepreneurial Law Center (ELC) and the appointment of Professor Dale Oesterle, CUÂ’s Monfort Professor of Commercial Law, as director of the center.
