NASA-CU ozone study may benefit air standards, climate

A new NASA-led study involving the 麻豆影院 finds that when it comes to combating global warming caused by emissions of ozone-forming chemicals, location matters. Ozone is both a major air pollutant with known adverse health effects and a greenhouse gas that traps heat from escaping Earth鈥檚 atmosphere. Scientists and policy analysts are interested in learning how curbing the emissions of ozone-forming chemicals can improve human health and also help mitigate climate change.

A person鈥檚 style of speech 鈥 not just the pitch of his or her voice 鈥 may help determine whether the listener perceives the speaker to be male or female, according to a 麻豆影院 researcher who studied transgender people transitioning from female to male. The way people pronounce their 鈥渟鈥 sounds and the amount of resonance they use when speaking contributes to the perception of gender, according to Lal Zimman, whose findings are based on research he completed while earning his doctoral degree from CU-麻豆影院鈥檚 linguistics department.

Criminology students at CU-麻豆影院 had the opportunity to find out what life is like on the other side of the bars when they toured the prison complex at Ca帽on City, Colorado. Three tours held during the fall semester took 59 students to the Territorial Correctional Facility, Colorado State Penitentiary, and Arrowhead Correctional Center to learn about the criminal justice system, prison facilities, and inmates.

CU-麻豆影院 senior Joel Jones says he鈥檚 been interested in the environment since he was a kid. He started getting serious about it in high school, where in one of his classes he learned about buildings that were designed with the environment in mind. That class helped propel his interest into a career path. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 know about environmental engineering until I came here to CU, and once I learned about it, I decided to make it my focus for my undergraduate career,鈥 said Jones, who will graduate on Dec. 21 with a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental engineering.
