CU-麻豆影院鈥檚 second-oldest residence hall reopens with mix of modern and historical

The 麻豆影院鈥檚 Baker Hall, closed the past 15 months for its first major renovation in more than 75 years, is welcoming 456 students next week with a modernized interior that better addresses the needs of today鈥檚 students while retaining the building鈥檚 original charm.

New and returning students moving into the 麻豆影院 residence halls can choose which day to move in Aug. 18-21, will swipe Buff OneCards instead of filling out a form to check in and will be able to take advantage of 鈥淨uick Drop Stations.鈥 鈥淲e take pride in doing our best to provide a warm welcome and a helping hand for our new and returning students,鈥 said John Fox, associate director of Residence Life. 鈥淭his year we decided to make some changes in order to make the process as smooth as possible.鈥

The Senior Auditors Program provides Colorado residents, ages 55 and older, the opportunity to attend classes on the 麻豆影院 campus. Tuition is free and participants pay just an administrative fee to cover registration, application processing and IT support. The program was established in 1973 and is coordinated through the CU-麻豆影院 Alumni Association. Course availability is dependent upon enrollment limits, with tuition-paying students given priority, and on fire code restrictions, which determine the number of students allowed in a room. Grades are not awarded and auditors do not receive credit toward a degree.

Sierra Nevada Corp. news release Sierra Nevada Corporation鈥檚 (SNC) Space Systems is pleased to announce it is expanding its relationship with the 麻豆影院 (CU-麻豆影院) through the signing of a letter of cooperation with CU-麻豆影院鈥檚 BioServe Space Technologies (BioServe). Through the cooperation, SNC and BioServe will jointly explore ways the Dream Chaser 庐 Space Utility Vehicle (SUV) can serve as an orbital platform for scientific experiments in microgravity and space life science research.

Aerospace Industry Insights event highlights CU's aerospace innovation and research

Members of the 麻豆影院 Chamber, a nonprofit business support and advocacy organization, visited CU-麻豆影院 July 29 to learn about the university鈥檚 latest advances in space science and aerospace. The Aerospace Industry Insights event, held at Fiske Planetarium, brought together local, state and federal officials; CU-麻豆影院 faculty, students and administrators; and leaders from the local business community. The purpose of the event, the first in a series sponsored by CU-麻豆影院 and the 麻豆影院 Chamber, was to highlight for the business community CU-麻豆影院's research and innovation in order to foster continued partnership and economic growth.

CU-麻豆影院 English professor wins prestigious PEN Award

Ruth Ellen Kocher, professor of English and director of the creative writing program at the 麻豆影院, has won a prestigious PEN Literary Award. Kocher was a co-winner of the PEN Open Book Award for her book of poems titled domina Un/blued. The award recognizes an exceptional book-length work of literature by an author of color. Also winning the award was Nina McConigley for Cowboys and East Indians .

NYC schools to use video games to teach computer coding

A program designed at the 麻豆影院 to teach kids to code using video games is being introduced into New York City public schools as part of an initiative to give every student access to computer science education. Scalable Game Design is a program developed over two decades by CU-麻豆影院 computer science Professor Alexander Repenning to spark an interest in coding among kids by allowing them to design and build their own video games. The idea behind the program, which uses drag-and-drop programming tools, is to combat the widely held notion that computer programming is hard and boring.

CU law alumnus pledges $1.5 million to support distinctive faculty position

Steve Hillard ('76) knew he wasn't done giving back to the University of Colorado Law School. He had donated generously to the capital campaign for the Wolf Law Building, but he had bigger plans. "I had a still-unfulfilled obligation to Colorado Law," said Hillard. "I am humbled by the fact that I have had some success in my career, and I definitely believe in giving back."

Moderate employment expansion in Colorado for the second half of 2014 is expected based on a second-quarter report by the 麻豆影院 Leeds School of Business, released today by Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler. 鈥淐oloradans continue their entrepreneurial spirit and are putting their creative ideas to the test,鈥 said Gessler. 鈥淭heir leadership and innovation should translate to moderate employment growth through the rest of the year.鈥
