In 2004,听Melissa Stockwell became the first woman to lose a limb in the Iraq War when she lost her leg to an IED during a routine patrol in Iraq. She went on to win three paratriathlon world championships and a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. Her memoir, The Power of Choice: My Journey from Wounded Warrior to World Champion, was published in 2020.

This is Stockwell鈥檚 fourth Paralympics, having competed in the 2021 Paralympic games Tokyo; the 2016 Paralympics in Rio, where she earned a bronze medal; and the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing.听听
