10 things to do this week: ‘Shake It Off’ with Swifties, hear from an Olympian, more

As you settle into a routine this week, it's the perfect time to check out all the great events campus has to offer. There truly is something for everyone. 

This week brings avante-garde film work, sexual health information, Sandia Day, wellness routine tips, a block party at Martin Acres, a free yoga class, a free showing of “Submarine†and more.

Monday, Sept. 11

  7–9 p.m.   Visual Arts Complex, Room 1B20
First Person Cinema shows avant-garde film and video work. It is the longest running university program in the world of its kind. At this event, the work of Colectivo Los Ingrávidos will be shown. Their work will have many experimental styles, themes and formats. 


Tuesday, Sept. 12

  11 a.m.–1 p.m.   UMC fountain
Sexual health is important, especially when it comes to making decisions about your health and well-being. Learn more and quiz yourself in a safe environment. Attendees will receive free at-home STI testing and sexual health supplies. 

   

  6 p.m.   Old Main Chapel   $5–$17
Spend an evening Chole Kim, the youngest woman to win an Olympic snowboarding gold medal. The two-time Olympic gold medalist received her first medal at age 17 for the women's snowboard halfpipe. Update: The location for this event has been moved from Macky Auditorium to Old Main Chapel.


Wednesday, Sept. 13

  2–4 p.m.   Rec Center
Everyone’s different, so it’s important to find a wellness routine that works for you. Visit the Rec in comfy clothes for fun activities that will change every half hour (including making your own aromatherapy). 

  2–3 p.m.   Rec Center, Mind Body Studio
Health and Wellness Services is collaborating with the Rec to bring students a free yoga class. Yoga is a method of moving your body in a healthy way. Take advantage of this opportunity and focus on your well-being this Wednesday. Keep an eye out for  being offered on Oct. 18, Nov. 15 and Dec. 6.


Thursday, Sept. 14

The Pride Office is inviting queer community members to a stress-free afternoon. Relax and enjoy some chill activities such as crafting or making art. This event is drop-in, so you can join in at any time between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. 

  8:30–9:30 p.m.   ​Fiske Planetarium   $8–$12
Whether or not you missed out on The Eras Tour, this show can give you an unforgettable laser Swiftie experience! The show features hits from Taylor Swift, a mega pop star who has sold 200 million records. Sing along to some of her greatest hits including “Love Story,†“Willow†and more.

Friday, Sept. 15

Sandia Day

Sandia National Laboratories invites you to Sandia Day—all about partnerships, ongoing research, funding, and career opportunities for students with the national security organization.

“Submarine†is a 2010 film following teen Oliver Tate—determined to lose his virginity before his 16th birthday and to save his parents’ failing marriage.

  5–8 p.m.   ​Martin Park, 36th Street and Eastman Avenue
Those currently living in or considering a future home in the Martin Acres neighborhood are invited to a free block party at Martin Park! Come mingle with neighbors and enjoy free food, games and more. Not interested in Martin Acres? Check out an  on Sept. 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Arrowhead Park.
