10 things to do this weekend: Nature scavenger hunt, pool party, more

This weekend brings Feel Good Fridays, open mic night, an In the Heights movie screening, yoga for stress and anxiety, a Buff Pool party with live music, Climate Cabaret and more.

Friday, Sept. 24

   12:15–12:45 p.m.    CU Art Museum
Come learn about a work of art and then participate in a related mindfulness practice. You are welcome to join in the museum galleries in person or virtually via Zoom. The powerful, guided meditation can undo stress, soothe the nervous system and help you feel relaxed and revitalized. All are welcome. for virtual attendance. 

   5–6:30 p.m.    Bald Mountain
Want to discover new plants and animals? Come join Trail Buffs on a Nature Scavenger Hunt on Bald Mountain to learn more about nature. In collaboration with Â鶹ӰԺ County Parks and Open Space, we will be using the iNaturalist app to identify and network with fellow Buffs and other communities across the world! There will be prizes for the winners of the scavenger hunt and food for everyone. Fill out this .

   7–9 p.m.   UMC, The Connection
Do you write your own songs or poetry? Or love telling jokes? Sign up for Open Mic Night! The Connection’s Club 156 is looking for singers, musicians, bands, comedians, poets, storytellers and more to perform. All types of performers, from first-timers to experienced artists, are welcome and supported. Sign up begins at 6 p.m. 

   7:30 p.m.    Chem 140
Bring your popcorn and a friend and come watch a free movie. Every Friday, Program Council will have a movie showing so you don’t have to worry about Friday night plans! Follow Usnavi, a sympathetic New York bodega owner, saving every penny every day as he imagines and sings about a better life. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.; the film begins at 8 p.m.

   8:30–10:30 p.m.    Farrand Field
Dress up and get ready to dance with fellow Buffs at this silent disco. Costumes are encouraged, and food and drink will be provided.


Saturday, Sept. 25

  1 p.m.    CU Museum of Natural History, Paleontology Hall
Join visiting artist Sam Van Aken, associate professor in the School of Art at Syracuse University, as he discusses The Open Orchard Project, an expansive new work on Governors Island, New York.  (participation in Friday's Apple Blitz is not required to attend). 

   4–5 p.m.    Rec Center, Mind Body Studio
Find a yoga practice that supports your physical, mental and emotional well-being. This class will show you how yoga can help you develop clarity, self-confidence and techniques to manage your health and well-being. No experience necessary, and all levels welcome.

   7–9 p.m.   Rec Center, Buff Pool
Grab a swimsuit and your towel and come join the Buff Pool party! Program Council is hosting a pool party, and you don’t want to miss it. For event details, follow on Instagram.

   7–10 p.m.    UMC, The Connection
Grab a couple of friends and get ready to have a great Saturday night at The Connection. Enjoy the fun of bowling with black lights, colored lane lights and color pins. It’s the only extreme bowling you’ll find in Â鶹ӰԺ! Also open Friday nights.


Sunday, Sept. 26

   2 p.m.    University Theatre    $22
 partners with  in New York City to produce 10 brief climate plays by authors from around the world interspersed with fun cabaret-style musical numbers. Humor, passion and imagination are put to work envisioning an equitable, survivable and thrivable future for all life and the ecosystems upon which life depends. Runs Sept. 24–Oct. 3.
