Photographer and mixed-media artist听Renee Cox will give a lecture on Tuesday, Nov. 15, as part of the Department of Art & Art History's (AAH)听Visiting Artist Program.听
One of the most controversial African-American artists working today, Cox has used her own body, both nude and clothed, to celebrate black womanhood and criticize a society she often views as racist and sexist. From the beginning, her work showed a deep concern for social issues and employed disturbing religious imagery; she continues to push the envelope听by working from her archives, shooting new subjects and utilizing听technologies in the digital photography medium.
Cox鈥檚 new work aims to听"unleash the potential of the ordinary and bring it into a new realm of possibilities."听Cox states, "It鈥檚 about time that we reimagine our own constitutions."
Cox received an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
The Visiting Artist Program has been a vital component of the AAH since 1972 and is one of the oldest programs of its kind. Each year, a diverse group of听nationally- and internationally-recognized artists are invited to CU to present their work and ideas to a large audience of students, faculty and community members. During their stay, artists present a public lecture, join the faculty-led Visiting Artist seminar to work closely with graduate and advanced undergraduate students,听meet with students for individual critiques and contribute to the program鈥檚 long-running,听professionally-produced artist interview series听"What Follows."
The lecture begins at 6:30 p.m. in VAC 1B20 and is free and open to the public.
