Last week, the national political spotlight was on our campus as we hosted the third Republican presidential candidate debate. More than 14 million people across the world watched the CNBC broadcast and saw striking images of our beautiful campus and the city of Â鶹ӰԺ. Millions more saw the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ name in coverage by national and international journalists. Oct. 28 was really a great day for our university to increase its visibility to new audiences.

At the same time, what an opportune day it was for civic engagement! Our students attended and volunteered at the debate, met CNBC media professionals in their classrooms and candidates walking around campus, participated in rallies on the Business Lawn and Farrand Field, attended a watch party in a packed Glenn Miller Ballroom, and partook in the Be Heard TV broadcast at the University Club. The media coverage of the day – including robust coverage by our student media – reflected the real passions of our politically active and engaged student body.

As chancellor, I am proud of every member of our campus community who peacefully and enthusiastically exercised his or her First Amendment rights, or who took advantage of the opportunity to explore in greater depth the ideas and issues that surrounded the debate, and that face our nation.

While the national media in recent days has focused on the exchange between the moderators and candidates, we have not been part of that strife. I believe that our role was viewed as highly professional by all sides. I’d like to take a moment to recognize all the efforts that were harnessed off the stage. Hundreds of CU employees played a part in ensuring that our campus acted as gracious hosts for this historic event. Months of planning went into hosting such a large event, and it was an enormous team lift across many campus departments.

For those involved, you have my thanks and admiration for a job well done. And for the students, faculty and staff who remained patient amid the parking, traffic and other impacts, I sincerely appreciate your support and sacrifice. It is a hallmark of a great university to be able host a vital national conversation, and CU-Â鶹ӰԺ did just that.
