The Program for Writing and Rhetoric at the Â鶹ӰԺ is hosting the first ever "Conference on Community Writing – Building Engaged Infrastructure" from Oct. 15 to 17 at the University Memorial Center.
But this isn’t your run-of-the mill academic conference.
The conference will consist of presentations, dialogues, workshops and DeepThink Tanks.
What is a DeepThink Tank, you ask? These are interactive sessions organized around the themes of community literacy, poverty, homelessness and prisons and resilient communities. They will be run by scholars and community leaders. Participants collaboratively generate theories and action plans for university and community transformation. In these high-energy sessions, participants help determine the agenda, ask and answer questions, and propose ideas as the group collectively shapes its future work.
Although the focus is on writing, the conference is interdisciplinary. Topics include: social entrepreneurship; sustainability; the environment; creative nonfiction; theater; ELL (English Language Learners); poverty studies; ethnography; digital storytelling; digital literacies; information literacies; Writing Center pedagogy; and community-based research and teaching.
The goal of the conference is to develop the resources and support structures necessary to foster community-based research and teaching in rhetoric and writing programs nationwide. More than 350 attendees from 145 universities, 41 states and three countries will be attending - from Fairbanks to Copenhagen and Berkeley to Yale.
While full conference registration is closed, community members, organizations, and university faculty, staff and students interested in day passes or in DeepThink Tank passes - are welcome. ÌýPasses can be purchased at the conference. Day passes are $60 and do not includeÌýlunch. DeepThink Tank passes are $35.
The conference is being sponsored by the President’s Fund for Humanities, the the Graduate Committee on the Arts and Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, the Office for Outreach and Engagement, CU Engage, Environmental Studies Program and INVST Community Studies.
