10 things to do this week. This is a weekly column highlighting events on campus and in 麻豆影院 by Samuel Fuller, history major and resident event virtuoso.
The CU-麻豆影院 campus and surrounding area provides a wide range of events and activities to satisfy everyone from your grandma to your thrill-seeking high school friend visiting from out of state. Our immediate access to the outdoors and the wealth of activities hosted on a weekly basis means there is no excuse for not taking that well-deserved study break.
This coming week, the CU-麻豆影院 campus provides aspiring singers with the opportunity to test their vocal skills in a venue more daunting than their shower; we celebrate Valentine鈥檚 Day with more exciting alternatives to dinner on Pearl with your better half, and we support our fellow Buffs as the CU Hockey team faces off against the CSU Rams in the Rocky Mountain Center Ice Showdown.听
Thursday, Feb. 12
Join your fellow students at Ralphie鈥檚 Cooking Basics in the UMC this Thursday from 5-6 p.m. We鈥檝e all been there, as the water boils over the top of the pan during our first attempt at making spaghetti. Never overcook your pasta or rice again by learning the basics of cooking for free each Thursday. Signup begins at 4:45 p.m. in the UMC dining room. Film Screening: 鈥淭his House I Live in.鈥 For the more politically conscious minds among us, 鈥淭his House I Live in鈥 provides an insight into the political and economic corruption of the decades long War on Drugs. The film will be shown from 6-8:30 p.m. in Hellems 252. Seats will be given on a first come first serve basis. More information
The CU Men鈥檚 Basketball team takes on the University of California at the Coors Events Center.听The game begins at 7 p.m., and the Buffs will be looking to bounce back with a win after two successive losses. Tickets for non-students start at $15, $5 for students, and can be purchased both and at the door. The basketball team will also be playing Stanford on Sunday, Feb. 15, the game beings at 2 p.m. in the Coors Events Center.
Karaoke Nights at Club 156 in The Connection at the UMC. Sing along to Nicki Minaj in the shower? Why not sing along to some more fun tunes with the help of a professional sound system and lighting stage this Thursday at 8 p.m. in Club 156. Tickets are free and open to everyone. Friday, Feb. 13
This Friday the 13th, the Women鈥檚 Resource Center is hosting the Girls in Gaming Tournament. If you鈥檙e a woman who likes to game, but feels out of place in the male dominated sphere of video games, then this is the tournament for you. The gaming menu will primarily include Super Smash Bros., as well as discussions about the 鈥渢rials and tribulations of being a female gamer.鈥 This event will take place in The Connection at the UMC from 7-9:30 p.m. More information can be found here: .
Saturday, Feb. 14
Celebrate Valentine鈥檚 Day with the 麻豆影院 Philharmonic at Macky Auditorium. If you鈥檙e looking for an alternative to the regular Valentine鈥檚 Day activities, Philippe Quint will be dispatching musical fireworks in the Red Violin concerto, based on the Academy Award-winning film score by John Corigliano. Take your Valentine to The Connection on Valentine鈥檚 Day for a two-for-one special on bowling all day (noon 鈥 12:30 a.m.). Includes bowling and shoe rental. At the heart of campus in the UMC, it is the perfect spot for your Valentine鈥檚 Day! Visit for more details.
Don鈥檛 have a date, no worries; Extreme Bowling is still taking place as per usual.听Extreme Bowling at the UMC鈥檚 connection includes black lights, colored lane lights and color pins. Lanes open at 7 p.m. and are open until midnight. Food and drink are available to purchase. Visit for more details.
Sunday, Feb. 15
The Rocky Mountain Center Ice Showdown. The CU Men鈥檚 club hockey team takes on their bitter rivals, the CSU Rams. Head down to the Pepsi Center in Denver to support your fellow Buffs. The game will start at 6 p.m. and tickets will be a flat $20. Ticket information can be found here: .
If you are looking for an alternative to organized activities, why not head out and enjoy the 麻豆影院 sunshine? 麻豆影院 offers an abundance of hiking trails, from Chautauqua to Mt. Sanitas. Or, if hiking isn鈥檛 quite your speed, 麻豆影院 B-Cycles are a fun and efficient way to get out and explore town. Head to Pearl Street for some people watching, or simply cruise around town with some friends. Locations for B-cycles can be found here . The weather is once again looking like it will be another scorcher of a weekend, so get out and enjoy it before the snow inevitably returns.
