ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano today announced the appointment of Charles V. β€œCharlie” Sweet as vice chancellor and managing senior associate university counsel for the CU-ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ campus.Μύ The appointment is effective Sept. 1.

Sweet has long ties to the University of Colorado system, having served as vice president and university counsel for the CU System from 1994 to 2007. Before that, from 1988 to 1994, he served as associate university counsel and the designated counsel for the CU-ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ campus. Most recently, he served as executive director of strategic planning and initiatives at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs from 2010 to 2014. From 2008 through 2009, Sweet was a partner in the Denver office of the law firm of Holme Roberts & Owen.

Prior to coming to ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ, Sweet served as general counsel for Old Dominion University in Virginia.Μύ

β€œCharlie’s long association with the University of Colorado and his esteem in the higher education legal community made him a natural pick for this important post,” said DiStefano. β€œHe will be a strong advocate for the campus’s legal interests, and a great strategic partner for our faculty, staff, students and administrators.”

The managing senior associate university counsel holds a senior position in the Office of University Counsel. In this position, Sweet will be responsible for the legal functions for CU-ΒιΆΉΣ°ΤΊ, and will advise the chancellor, the cabinet and CU-Β颹ӰԺ’s combined executive leadership on legal and policy matters. The position reports to the vice president and university counsel and supervises a staff of four attorneys and two support staff in CU-Β颹ӰԺ’s legal offices. ΜύΜύ

As a campus vice chancellor, Sweet will report to the chancellor and serve as an officer of the campus and a member of the chancellor’s cabinet. In this role, he will be responsible for the implementation of campus goals and objectives related to the provision of legal services and for the successful implementation of the campus’s strategic plans.

Sweet earned a bachelor’s degree from Duke University and a law degree from the University of Virginia. He is a member of the bar in both Colorado and Virginia.
