On May 15, 2014, at about 6:30 p.m., a man and his dog were attacked by a coyote as they walked on the CU-麻豆影院 east campus property. This wooded area, southwest of Foothills Parkway and Arapahoe Avenue, is about 1 mile east of CU鈥檚 Main Campus.
The man reported that after focusing on them for some time, the coyote approached and eventually attacked his dog. The dog was on a leash and the man was able to pull the dog away from the attack. The coyote then lunged at the man, biting his left forearm as he reached out to block the coyote鈥檚 advance. The male was able to fend off the attack by kicking the coyote and swinging a stick as it retreated.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife are providing signage in the vicinity of the attack and will continue to monitor the area for coyote activity.
CU Police encourage the community to review the following coyote encounter advice provided by Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
If a Coyote Approaches You:
- Do not run or turn your back
- Be as big and loud as possible
- Wave your arms and throw objects
- Face the coyote and back away slowly
- If attacked, fight back
Protect Your Pets:
- Keep pets on a short leash
- Use extra caution dusk through dawn
- Avoid known or potential den sites and thick vegetation
- Do not allow dogs to interact with coyotes
Be Prepared 鈥� If You Have Concerns 麻豆影院 an Encounter with a Coyote:
- Recreate during daylight hours
- Walk with a walking stick
- Keep a deterrent spray handy
- Carry noise makers or rocks to throw
