The comfortable furniture and laid-back atmosphere of the (CUCRC) in the UMC have the feel of a favorite hang out spot, and that鈥檚 exactly the point, according to Sam Randall, the center鈥檚 assistant director.
The center, which opened on campus last August and is free, provides a place to connect with others who are living a sober lifestyle, and offers support for CU-麻豆影院 students in recovery from alcohol or drug use and other addictive behaviors.
鈥淭his is a home right in the middle of campus for anyone who is in recovery, as well as others who choose a life of sobriety or abstinence,鈥 Randall said. 鈥淭he most important service of the center is the sense of community that it provides. It can sometimes feel a little isolating and challenging to be sober or in recovery while in college. The CUCRC provides a place where students can meet other like-minded people, strengthen friendships, study and hang out together. It's a place where sobriety is听celebrated.鈥
Students and the campus community are invited to visit the center on Friday, Feb. 21, for a public open house and dedication from 2 鈥 4 p.m. in the UMC room 102 - down the hallway next to The Connection bowling alley.
The open house provides an opportunity for anyone to stop by and check out the center and see what it is like. They will find that it is informal and inviting, Randall said.
鈥淚 think sometimes when people hear the word center, they think of an official research center with largely academic or administrative functions, and that can be intimidating,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hile we do have a professional staff, our main function is to provide a supportive community and place for students in recovery and sobriety to connect with each other.鈥
The center also provides recovery coaching and acts a resource for other campus resources and services -- and听offers space for 12-step recovery groups and the student-run club to meet. For students looking for fun ways to get involved, the center hosts weekly events, including bowling (Wednesdays, 8 鈥 10 p.m.), free yoga (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30 p.m.) and sober social hours (Tuesdays 6:30 鈥 9 p.m. and Fridays (8 鈥 midnight).
鈥淚f you think you might be interested, I鈥檇 say come check us out, whether you want to hang out with people with similar goals, or you want get connected to our services,鈥 Randall said. 鈥淵ou will find a very supportive and understanding community here at the CUCRC.鈥
