With the change in Colorado law allowing retail marijuana sales now in effect, please take a moment to review the following information:
- Colorado's marijuana laws only permit the possession of an ounce of marijuana for personal consumption for those 21 and over. Marijuana remains illegal in Colorado for those under the age of 21.
- Marijuana remains illegal on our campus under federal law and the and is not allowed in any CU residence hall or university building. Besides federal law, possession of marijuana is still banned under university housing rules. The Drug Free Schools and Communities Act requires universities to ensure that illegal drugs (under federal schedule, which includes marijuana) are not possessed or used on campus, or else the institution can face a loss of federal funding.
- The recreational use of marijuana is legal only in one's private domicile; no public use of marijuana is allowed under the statute. So, it can be possessed and used in the quantities specified under the law only in private, off-campus domestic settings (apartments, houses) if allowed by a landlord鈥檚 lease, for those at least 21 years old.
- Students found possessing or using marijuana on campus face sanctions and penalties under the CU-麻豆影院 Student Code of Conduct.
- Student-athletes, even those 21 and over, are not permitted to use marijuana as doing so is a violation of the NCAA's banned substances guidelines.
