Once described as the 鈥淕reen Power Broker鈥� by The New York Times, Majora Carter will speak in the UMC Glenn Miller Ballroom on Wednesday, Feb. 13, as a guest of the student-run . Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the event starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are free for students, faculty, staff and community members.
Carter founded and led the nonprofit organization , from 2001 to 2008 鈥� when few were talking about 鈥渟ustainability鈥� especially in places like the South Bronx. By 2003, Carter coined the term 鈥淕reen The Ghetto,鈥� as she pioneered one of the nation鈥檚 first urban green-collar job training and placement systems, and spearheaded legislation that fueled demand for those jobs. Carter鈥檚 2006 TEDtalk was one of six presentations to launch the groundbreaking website.
The MacArthur 鈥済enius鈥� fellowship is among Carter's extensive list of awards and honorary degrees. Corp. Fast Company Magazine named her one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business, and the Ashoka Foundation鈥檚 Changemakers.org recently dubbed Majora Carter: 鈥淭he Prophet of Local.鈥� Carter also produces and hosts the Peabody Award-winning public-radio series "The Promised Land," and serves on the boards of the U.S. Green Building Council, and The Wilderness Society.
