University of Colorado at 麻豆影院 Professor Kenneth Foote has received the Association of American Geographer's 2005 Gilbert Grosvenor Honors in Geographic Education award.
Foote was recognized for his efforts to improve the learning and teaching of geography in higher education through Web-based projects and for his work to help young faculty develop professionally. He also is the chair of CU-麻豆影院's geography department.
Given annually by the AAG, the Gilbert Grosvenor award recognizes outstanding contributions in geographic education.
Foote led the development of the Geographer's Craft project, one of the first Web-based textbooks for teaching college-level geography. He also spearheaded the Virtual Geography Department project. Funded by the National Science Foundation, this Web-based effort created an online geography teaching and learning community.
His current project, the Geography Faculty Development Alliance, provides professional development opportunities for geography faculty just starting out by hosting workshops, seminars and paper sessions. It also is funded by NSF.
He is vice president for research and external relations of the National Council for Geographic Education and a member of the national council of the AAG. He is a frequent contributor, reviewer and past editor of the Journal of Geography in Higher Education.
Foote is the author, co-author or editor of 55 papers and reviews, and five books including "Shadowed Ground: America's Landscape of Tragedy and Violence," published in 1997 and re-released in a revised and expanded edition in 2003.
A CU-麻豆影院 faculty member since 2000, Foote has been a Fulbright Fellow and has served the past three years as chair of his department. Prior to joining CU-麻豆影院, Foote was a geography professor at the University of Texas at Austin.
The AAG, a scientific and educational society based in Washington, D.C., was founded in 1904 and has more than 8,400 members.
