Large banners congratulating Carl Wieman's selection as the 2004 U.S. Professor of the Year for doctoral and research universities will be displayed in three prominent locations on the University of Colorado at 麻豆影院 campus on Thursday, Nov. 18.
At 10 a.m., CU-麻豆影院 employees will hang a 10-by-20-foot banner on the east side of the Duane Physics Building, located just south of Folsom Stadium. Duane Physics houses the CU-麻豆影院 physics department and the classrooms where Wieman teaches.
Two other large banners will be displayed on the south side of Regent Hall near the corner of Broadway and Regent Drive and on the hillside east of the Coors Events Conference Center along 28th Street.
Campus administrators who will be available to talk about Wieman on Nov. 18 include Provost Phil DiStefano at (303) 492-5537 and Professor John Cumalat, chair of the CU-麻豆影院 physics department, at (303) 492-6952. Wieman will be in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 18 to be honored by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
Also available to talk is the co-teacher of Wieman's undergraduate class on "The Physics of Everyday Life," research associate and physics lecturer Kathy Perkins at (303) 492-4367, and doctoral student Wendy Adams who is working with Wieman on physics education research at (970) 539-6154.
On Nov. 19, Wieman is scheduled to return to Denver and give a talk at CU-Denver about his vision on what should be done to improve science education at a symposium on science teaching and learning for middle school, high school and college instructors. He will speak at 2 p.m. in room 1130 of the North Classroom building on "Using the Tools of Science to Teach and Measure Science Learning" and also will participate in a 3 p.m. panel discussion.
On Nov. 20, Wieman will participate in a 10 a.m. panel discussion on science teaching in the JILA Auditorium at CU-麻豆影院. The two-day symposium is sponsored by the CU-Denver and CU-麻豆影院 chemistry departments and is open to the public.
