Join us for a reception with the artist on Thursday, September 28, 5-7pm at the Vicki Myhren Gallery at 2121 E. Asbury Avenue in Denver.

This fall, the Vicki Myhren Gallery will present new works by acclaimed artist Gonkar Gyatso. In 2009 Gyatso became the first Tibetan artist to exhibit at the Venice Biennale and his work is collected in several international museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Gyatso has moved consistently throughout his career, often finding himself as the voice of Tibetan diasporic artists in New York City, London, and Dharamsala, India. At his current residence in Chengdu, China, Gyatso has faced the harsh restrictions of an almost three-year quarantine; it is only recently that political protests have forced a governmental acquiescence to the call for a reopening.

In this exhibition, the artist addresses the massive impact of COVID-19 (and its subsequent political implications), other global events, and personal reflections in his work as the gallery exhibits over 300 small drawings on paper for the first time. In addition to these drawings, the artist is constructing three new contemporary Buddha sculptures specifically for the DU exhibition with the help of a Tibetan-run foundry in Chengdu.

The exhibit runs from September 28th to November 26th.

For more information:

http://vicki-myhren-gallery.du.edu/2023/08/16/exhibition-announcement/

http://vicki-myhren-gallery.du.edu/daily-offerings-essay/

Off

Traditional

0

On

White
Thu, 21 Sep 2023 21:00:38 +0000 Anonymous 517 at /tibethimalayainitiative CU 麻豆影院's Natalie Avalos and Dawa Lokyitsang on "Decolonizing Himalayan Studies" in Series through Humboldt University /tibethimalayainitiative/2021/10/26/cu-boulders-natalie-avalos-and-dawa-lokyitsang-decolonizing-himalayan-studies-series CU 麻豆影院's Natalie Avalos and Dawa Lokyitsang on "Decolonizing Himalayan Studies" in Series through Humboldt University Anonymous (not verified) Tue, 10/26/2021 - 20:44

Tags:

Related Activities

Join CU 麻豆影院鈥檚 Natalie Avalos (Ethnic Studies) and Dawa Lokyitsang (Anthropology) in a speaker series on 鈥淒ecolonizing Himalayan Studies.鈥 The online series runs from November 1, 2021 to January 17, 2022, sponsored by Humboldt University in Berlin.

Decolonisation is a concern that is extending into various areas of academic discourse and knowledge production. In an institutional context decoloniality, as Walter Mignolo (2017) puts it, has the claim to de-link (detach) epistemologies from colonial hierarchies of knowledge in order to engage in an epistemic reconstitution. But also, in popular discourse, the term鈥 decolonisation鈥 currently receives an increasing amount of attention. Acknowledging this trend, the lecture series raises the question in what form decolonisation could come theoretically for the field of Himalayan studies and how the implementation could look like. Reflecting on this discourse, we have invited academics and experts from varying disciplines to share their experiences and thoughts on the matter. We hear about practical examples from their own research background and practice. Among them, some have already dealt intensively with the issue and have organized workshops and lectures addressing the issue, such as the session of the American Association of Religious Studies (2019). How do they encounter the concept of decolonisation in their specific context?

The aim is to listen and learn from each other and put the focus on Himalayan perspectives. In doing so, the lecture series seeks to stimulate a joint learning process.

Register in advance here: https://hu-berlin.zoom.us/meeting/register/u5crcu6hrzkjHNIPeTxwYcvC61Ux0sf-DIhn

Off

Traditional

0

On

White
Wed, 27 Oct 2021 02:44:21 +0000 Anonymous 481 at /tibethimalayainitiative Oyungerel Tsedevdamba and Jeffrey L. Byers, Ph.D
CAS Luncheon Series
Thursday, September 26 @ 12:30PM
CASE Building, room W311

The accumulation of solid waste in the world鈥檚 high mountain basecamps and high camps has been a chronic problem facing alpine and nival ecosystems since mountaineering first became popular in the 1850s. The problem has further intensified with the steady acceleration of trekking and mountaineering tourism during the past four decades. But while the issue of garbage in the Everest basecamp has made headlines for decades, little attention has been paid to the problem of tourist-related solid waste accumulations along the main trekking trails throughout the park. Each year, an estimated 400 tons of plastic, metals, glass, and other refuse is generated by the tourist industry that is burned and buried in some 75 community landfills located near villages, creating health hazards for humans and livestock alike. At the request of local communities and government authorities, the University of Colorado and Arizona State University have been working since July 2019 to develop and implement a sustainable solid waste management plan based upon the principles of reduction, re-use, recycling, and collaborative governance. The presentation will cover the project鈥檚 progress to date and include a review of the history of tourist-related solid waste in high mountain regions (solid and human), management constraints, and prospective solutions.

Alton C. This is especially true in the esoteric Great Completeness (Dzogchen) traditions. But the inexpressible is not inaccessible. It can be known. Sensing, affective feeling, and the kinesthetic engagement of the body are intrinsic to such knowing. The brilliant poet-yogi Longchen Rabjam, who gave voice to Tibet鈥檚 most powerful Dzogchen compositions, reshaped earlier Buddhist understandings of mind, body, and senses. He saw as portals to an intimate, inexpressible knowing This inexpressible yet ubiquitous, easily obscured yet thoroughly available wisdom is Dzogchen鈥檚 open secret.

Although reality is inexpressible, it is deeply felt. What does it feel like? To the body it feels like flows deep within. In wisdom it arises as states of wonder, delight, and loving responsiveness. Such states can seem impossibly esoteric. Yet there are analogies to them in everyday experience. Intuition, for example, also springs forth of its own accord. In philosophy, metaphor and poetry, Longchenpa makes the strange familiar, revealing how these awakened states, seemingly esoteric and distant, are an open secret because our sensibilities are primordially primed for their own awakening. Wisdom, he says, is present throughout every mind and body, and thus, potentially as clear as the radiance of a sunlit sky.

Anne C.
