Language Services

Our office also assists in translation and interpretation services in order to facilitate effective communication and understanding in a multilingual work environment. 

Language services can include written translation, simultaneous interpretation, liaison interpretation and sign language. The Division is committed to providing information to all employees in a way that can be understood. We currently have employees whose native language is not English and to ensure access and inclusion language services can be used. To serve the greatest number of divisional employees, currently we are focusing our translation efforts in the following languages Nepali, Spanish, Tibetan, Lao and Mandarin. 

   Simultaneous Interpretation 

This technique is most appropriate for big events, such as a Town Hall Meeting. Headsets are used and the message is delivered in real time. 

   Liaison Interpretation 

This technique is less formal and is mainly used for small meetings, such as performance plan meetings, coaching sessions, conflict resolutions, mediating, etc. The speaker pauses after presenting an idea to allow the interpreter to convey the message to the listener. 

To further support staff engagement, the Division of Student Affairs has established guidelines for utilizing translation services.
