The dean’s list of advice: Celebrating the season

Devin Cramer, acting dean of students and associate vice chancellor for student affairs
October can be a busy month for many students. Between midterms, extracurriculars and other responsibilities, some of you may be experiencing more stress than usual.

There are many ways to help relieve stress, with some choices being more helpful than others. When things feel stressful, I encourage you to find positive ways to cope. Taking time to celebrate the fall season can be a great way to find balance, de-stress and make it through this month.

Get into the fall spirit

With the changing colors of leaves, nice weather and many things to do, Â鶹ӰԺ is a great place to be during the fall season. I encourage you to find simple ways to enjoy autumn this month.

You could visit a local coffee shop for an apple cider or pumpkin latte, or head to the Â鶹ӰԺ Farmers Market for seasonal food and other items. Spend time outside before winter arrives, whether it’s going for a hike, biking on the Â鶹ӰԺ Creek Path or enjoying other outdoor activities. Whatever your hobbies or interests are, make time to relax and enjoy this time of year.

Attend October events

With Halloween and Homecoming this month, there are many events that allow you to take a break from your studies, connect with fellow Buffs and have fun:

  • Watch a free scary movie during .
  • Decorate cookies and enjoy free pumpkin bread and hot chocolate at .
  • Paint pumpkins and get lost in a corn maze during .
  • Play like mini golf, pingpong, foosball, cornhole and shuffleboard.
  • Check out the featuring Evan Giia & Chet Porter.
  • Get to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Â鶹ӰԺ Theater.
  • Review all upcoming student events.

Look out for yourselves and each other

Whatever you choose to do for Halloween later this month, please be safe and responsible. You’re a Buff wherever you are, and Buffs look out for each other and take care of each other.

  • If you are concerned about your safety or someone else's, keep an eye on the situation and don’t hesitate to call for help.
  • Review the Amnesty Policy also to learn more about what to do if you need to call for help in an alcohol- or drug-related emergency.
  • Review more information about how you can be an effective bystander and look out for other members of the community.
  • Take safety precautions when you can, like using the buddy system and getting home safely by using CU NightRide.
  • Remember that you’re a member of the larger Â鶹ӰԺ community. Be considerate and respectful to your neighbors and those around you.

If you plan to celebrate by dressing up in a costume, consider the impact your decision might have on others. Be mindful and respectful, and avoid carrying fake weapons that can appear real to those around you.

And if you’re struggling this month—whether it’s with academics, mental health or other needs— please reach out and use campus resources available to you.

I hope you can find time to take a break and enjoy the fall season safely. Please take care of yourselves and each other.
