Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) and CU NightRide provide safe (and free) rides to staff, students and faculty.

Do you carpool or take public transit to get to work? GRH provides a free taxi ride to your home (wherever that may be) in the event of an emergency or last-minute work schedule change. To book a ride, employees should consult the guidelines/conditions of use, and will be asked to present their EcoPass. All rides through GRH are reimbursed by the university, but the staff member pays for any tip.

If you need to travel within �鶹ӰԺ city limits or get around campus after dark, consider CU NightRide. Entirely run by students, NightRide works in a similar fashion to Uber/Lyft (without the payment). Rides are scheduled through the TapRide app when you’re ready to go, with an estimated pick-up time provided. Download the app, check hours, and find out more general information through the CU NightRide website.

Nationwide, and here at home, demand for counseling services is increasing. CU �鶹ӰԺ has responded with a commitment to provide free and confidential mental health services to all staff, 24/7. Most people would not hesitate to seek assistance for a sprain or fracture, but some are reluctant to seek help with emotional stress. The university community is committed to removing the stigma associated with psychiatric support.

To seek assistance, dial (833) 533-CHAT (2428) for immediate crisis counseling or assistance finding long-term resources. The Faculty Staff Assistance Program is also available to all CU staff. FSAP has recently increased their staff, and can provide up to six free counseling sessions with little to no wait. To schedule an appointment, visit the FSAP website.

Did you know that every time you visit the vending machine and deposit your spare change or swipe your credit card, you’re helping a colleague? Through the university’s Pepsi vending contract, a small portion of funds from each purchase goes to the Children of Faculty/Staff Scholarship. Typical award amounts are $750-1,500 per year, and support dependents of CU staff and faculty for the fall, spring, or summer semesters.

Please join us on Wednesday, December 5th in the Glenn Miller Ballroom at the UMC for breakfast between 7 and 9 a.m. The event is open to all staff in appreciation for all you do for CU �鶹ӰԺ throughout the year. Bring your Buff One Card and enjoy breakfast and socializing with your fellow staff members. Campus administration will be serving breakfast to express their appreciation for all you do. Come by to see our Deans, AVCs, Provost and others, and enjoy a free meal.

Donations for Emergency Family Assistance Association of �鶹ӰԺ County (EFAA) will be accepted as part of this event. Specific needs this year include canned fruit, condiments, cereal, canned black beans, and toilet paper, but any non-perishable items are appreciated. We thank you in advance for your generosity.

All staff are invited to participate in this year’s system-wide Diversity and Inclusion Summit - Intent vs. Impact: Improving Inclusive Interactions, held this year at CU �鶹ӰԺ. The Diversity and Inclusion Summit is a free event open to all students, faculty, staff, and City of �鶹ӰԺ employees. Too often,well-intended communications can produce unintended or harmful impacts. This dynamic can play a key role in leaving individuals or groups feeling divided, and may impede progress towards building inclusive communities. The goal with this year’s Diversity & Inclusion Summit is to bridge this gap and lessen the divide between intent and impact by providing information on recognizing such occurrences and learning behaviors to mitigate them.

Keynote speaker Dr. Beverly Tatum, president emerita of Spelman College and author of the book Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? and Other Conversations about Race, will be speaking with Chancellor DiStefano on November 13 at 10 a.m. in the UMC Glenn Miller Ballroom. Dr. Tatum is a clinical psychologist widely known for both her expertise on race relations and as a thought leader in higher education. Her thirteen years as the president of Spelman College (2002-2015) were marked by innovation and growth. In 2013 Dr. Tatum’s visionary leadership was recognized when she received the Carnegie Academic Leadership Award. Small group discussion sessions on Dr. Tatum’s book will follow her presentation.

Staff Council will be hosting a Hospitality Suite during the summit for staff members from all campuses. Please stop by for refreshments and conversation between sessions.

The Infrastructure & Sustainability Division Mentor Program (ISMP) is designed to provide our staff with formal opportunities for professional development and mentoring. The 2018-2019 ISMP kicked off last Thursday with a successful launch held in the new CASE building.

Thanks in large part to the outreach efforts of CU �鶹ӰԺ Staff Council, participation grew over 18% this year, with 105 participants forming 53 mentor-partnership teams. Over half of participants in the program are first-timers, and many of those are front-line service workers who did not hear about the program in past years. In addition to staff from Infrastructure & Sustainability, the program expanded to include representatives from campus units such as Student Affairs; Theatre and Dance; Sustainability, Energy and Environment Community (SEEC); Human Resources; the Office of Data Analytics (ODA); the Law School; Housing & Dining Services; and the Procurement Service Center. Alan Slinkard gets around quite a bit in his role as a Facilities Management Project Specialist. By talking to his numerous staff connections in the Stadium Trade shops, Alan collected fifty coats within a matter of days. “We can do better than that,” he said, as he informed us of his overall goal of collecting one hundred coats to distribute to needy Coloradans, adding “Let’s keep the momentum going!”

When eight-year-old Lettie Portner learned from her mom, Nancy, that the CU �鶹ӰԺ Staff Council was conducting a coat drive, Lettie wanted to make sure two of her coats found a new home keeping someone her age and size warm. As Lettie put it, “I just want to make sure these coats go to a girl.” Way to go Lettie, you are an inspiration to us all!

Get inspired! Find a coat (or several) you haven’t worn for a while, find one of the many bins located across campus, and share the gift of warmth with someone this season. The drive runs through November 30th.
