Bio
Katherine is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Sociology. Her research interests include population health, machine learning, and quantitative methods. Prior to joining the department, Katherine received her B.S. in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse and her M.A. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.
Katherine’s research investigates the intersections between health, social media, and policy. One of her research projects examines the similarities between pro-anorexic and bodybuilder behaviors on social media using computational methods and experimental design to understand how individuals perceive such content and how humans and machine learning techniques classify these populations. Additionally, Katherine is working with a team of researchers to investigate privacy co-management practices of Latinx adolescents on social media. Across these projects, she is interested in how to design social media platform policies that support healthy behaviors.
Katherine applies her passion for quantitative methods and policy related research in her position as a Quantitative Research Technician and Project Coordinator for the National Research Center for Distance Education and Technological Advancements (DETA). She works with her fellow colleagues to improve access and support for distance education for all students in post-secondary education through evidence-based, cross-institutional online learning practices and technologies.
