Throughout human history, people have been observing life and wondering: why does that thing do that? The field of inquiry that uses an observation-focused approach to understand nature is called natural history, and understanding natural history can teach us about local organisms, inspire creative research, and connect us to the places where we live. What’s more, is that studying natural history can help us develop observational and problem solving skills, interdisciplinary thinking, and provides us with the detailed information needed to understand and solve environmental problems from the local to the global scale. In this course, we will learn about the biodiversity of the Front Range, focusing on insects, reptiles and amphibians, and plants with historical importance. We will emphasize hands-on exploration, learning how to identify insects and preserve plants in the laboratory. We will take field trips to wild places to observe animals in their natural environments, and visit local museums to meet with experts cataloguing a wide variety of species. Throughout the course, we’ll nurture our creativity through scientific illustration, all while garnering a deep connection to our local environment.
