Program Summary听

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism invites cooperative agreement applications to evaluate the cumulative and progressive effects of combined HIV infection and alcohol abuse in patient populations that are growing older and living well longer. This project must address several questions of current interest, including, but not limited to coinfection with the Hepatitis C virus, involvement of peripheral neuropathy in frailty, potential neurotoxic effects of antiretroviral medications, and interactive effects with advancing age on sensory and motor functioning.听 Clinical research knowledge that would be gained from this project could position "translational" efforts in the development of better and more focused treatments for observed comorbid neurological, cognitive, and motor deficits, which may also be relevant to other disease-affected aging populations.听 This project must directly address the NIH Office of AIDS Research priority for understanding "HIV-associated comorbidities, coinfections, and complications including:听 addressing the impact of HIV-associated comorbidities, including tuberculosis, malignancies; cardiovascular, neurological, and metabolic complications; and premature aging associated with long-term HIV disease and antiretroviral therapy."

Clinical trials not allowed.
