Perovskites
Perovskites are a specific class of advanced materials that RASEI has a special focus in, so much of the narrative in the Nanoscience and Advanced Materials Science is related to this foci.
Perovskites have remarkable physical properties, which has inspired a great deal of curiosity. In particular perovskite-based solar cells have achieved amazing energy conversion efficiency improvements in a very short time, now rivalling existing commercial silicon-based solar cells. Perovskite systems can be fabricated using low-cost, solution-based processes, significantly reducing manufacturing costs and improving the affordability of solar energy installations.
Researchers in RASEI are working on the fundamental understanding of perovskite systems, enhancing their efficiency, scalability, reproducibility, and reliability. The aim is to drive the field toward scalable and commercial system. One exciting space of research is so-called Tandem perovskite-silicon solar cells, where perovskite technology is used in combination with existing silicon-based systems, enhancing the efficiency of existing systems and the possibility of near-to-market perovskite devices.
