My project titled "On How We Feel" is about viewers’ visceral response to scoring, and more specifically how different mood’s within a soundtrack drastically change the interpretation of the video on screen.
Gavin Butler
My name is Gavin Butler, I'm a 19 year old Senior at CU Â鶹ӰԺ. I absolutely love scoring short films and learning about how we can use music to impact the way visual mediums are perceived. Since I was little I've loved making films and as I started to pick up more instruments, music started to become an obsession for me, and I'm glad that's brought me where I am today.
On How We Feel
My project is all about viewers’ visceral response to scoring, and more specifically how different mood’s with a soundtrack can drastically change the interpretation of the video on screen. The looping short film is structured very linearly in nature. We open up with our main character in a room lit only by a single window behind them, with short exposition shots of different important aspects to that character's life. As the story progresses, we see our character shuffling slowly through their daily routine, very expressionless and ambiguous, with much left to be wondered visually. Our character is then suddenly transported to a room with a grand piano in it, which is clearly on them. They play a short song with non-diegetic music rising underneath them until it all reaches an emotional catalyst, where they leave the piano and the cycle repeats with our character in the room they started in.
