PREP Undergrad Student Assistant II - Science Communications Specialist Position at NIST in the Public Safety Communications Research Division (PREP0002722)

This position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology鈥檚 (NIST) Professional Research Experience Program (PREP). NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.


The Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) is a special partnership between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the 麻豆影院. PREP provides research opportunities to CU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in NIST labs to gain research experience alongside NIST scientists.

Research Location:

At NIST in the Public Safety Communications Research Division.

Summary of the Position:

Provide high-level scientific writing and editing for program communications, including articles, website, email marketing, social media, internal/external correspondence, reports, and publications, as well as educational materials.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the creation of original content such as articles, web pages, blog posts, or other written materials.
  • Conduct research to gather information, verify facts, and ensure the accuracy and credibility of the content.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with stakeholders and team members to understand requirements, provide updates, and address feedback.
  • Adapt writing style, tone, and voice to suit different audiences, platforms, and communication objectives.
  • Create and update briefing and marketing materials needed for conferences, speaking engagements, and other outreach events.
  • Coordinate and facilitate timely communication and outreach efforts with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Review and revise content for clarity, coherence, accuracy, grammar, spelling, punctuation, style, and consistency.
  • Manage time effectively to meet deadlines and deliver high-quality content on schedule.
  • Ensure that content complies with relevant laws, regulations, ethical standards, and client guidelines, such as Section 508 compliance.
  • Maintain awareness of industry trends, best practices, and new technologies to continuously improve writing and editing skills.

Requirements:

In progress bachelor鈥檚 degree in communications or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to translate complex topics to a general audience.
  • Experience gathering, analyzing, and composing complex information.
  • Experience translating technical information into clear, readable materials to be used by technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with subject matter experts in technical fields.
  • Ability to work independently and move between tasks.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with email marketing, contact management, Twitter, LinkedIn, Drupal, or similar.

Length of Term:

  • Start Date: 10/1/2024
  • End Date: 9/30/2025

  • Must currently possess a 3.0 GPA or higher.
  • Must be a degree seeking student through CU 麻豆影院

Hourly Rate:

  • $21.29

Purpose: The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) hosts the Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) which is designed to provide valuable laboratory experience and financial assistance to undergraduates, post-bachelor鈥檚 degree holders, graduate students, master鈥檚 degree holders, postdocs, and faculty.


PREP is a 5-year cooperative agreement between NIST laboratories and participating PREP Universities to establish a collaborative research relationship between NIST and U.S. institutions of higher education in the following disciplines including (but may not be limited to) biochemistry, biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, engineering, electronics, materials science, mathematics, nanoscale science, neutron science, physical science, physics, and statistics. This collection of information is needed to facilitate administrative functions of the PREP Program.


Routine Uses: NIST will use the information collected to perform the requisite reviews of the applications to determine eligibility, and to meet programmatic requirements. Disclosure of this information is also subject to all the published routine uses as identified in the Privacy Act System of Records Notices: NIST-1: NIST Associates.
