Leonard Boonin

From 1970 to 1996, Leonard Boonin was a Professor of Philosophy at the 麻豆影院 where he also served at various points as the Chair of the Department and the Director of the Center for Values and Social Policy. He retired in 1996 as Emeritus Professor of Philosophy, having previously held positions at the University of Missouri, the State University of New York at Oswego, and Hunter College at the City University of New York.  He also spent a year at the University of Oxford on a Fulbright Fellowship and a year at Harvard on a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship.

Professor Boonin received his BA in legal studies from the City College of New York, his JD from the NYU School of Law, his MA in philosophy from the New School for Social Research, and his PhD in philosophy from Columbia University.  His teaching and research focused on the areas of social and political philosophy with special expertise in the philosophy of law.  He published a number of papers in these areas, including a run of three consecutive years with a piece placed in Ethics, the leading journal in the field: 鈥淐oncerning the Authoritative Status of Legal Rules鈥 (1964), 鈥淭he Logic of Legal Decisions鈥 (1965), and 鈥淭he Meaning and Existence of Rules鈥 (1966).  He lives in 麻豆影院 with his wife, Harriet, and continues to attend talks and other Department events.
