With the academic year just beginning, we鈥檙e looking forward even as we reflect on summer highlights: Last month, we enjoyed hosting a reception for College of Music students studying at the Aspen Music Festival and School, including our Ensemble Flatirons brass quintet pictured here atop Aspen Mountain! • Meet incoming Assistant Professor of Violin Alex Gonzalez: A new member of the College of Music faculty shares his approach to preparing students to become universal musicians, and fostering an environment of diversity and inclusivity. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not about hyper-specialization, but about flexibility, creativity and keeping an open mind,鈥� he says.
• 鈥楽oundscapes of the People鈥� explores Pueblo鈥檚 history through music: The College of Music鈥檚 American Music Research Center has embarked on a research project to document, preserve and engage with diverse musical and cultural influences in and around Pueblo, Colorado. In this onsite video, learn more about how Soundscapes of the People explores ways that musical traditions have served to bridge social, ethnic, urban/rural and religious identities.
• Check out upcoming events focused on diversity, equity + inclusion at the College of Music, including our weekly tea + equity chats for students, faculty, staff and other campus constituents on alternating Wednesdays and Thursdays ... starting today, Sept. 8, at 4 p.m. in the Grusin Lobby!
• On Sept. 13, join Chancellor Philip DiStefano for the annual State of the Campus address followed by breakfast. All students, staff and faculty are invited to attend in person or watch via livestream.听
• On Sept. 21鈥攁s part of the Retired Faculty Association's Distinguished Professor Seminar Series鈥擯rofessor of Piano David Korevaar (joined by fellow faculty members Carlo Caballero, Meta Weiss and Charles Wetherbee) will perform two large-scale works by C茅cile Chaminade, and discuss her career and the trajectory from fame to obscurity. Join us for this free event in Grusin Music Hall!
• Does your commute to/from campus use the 30th and Colorado intersection? From Saturday, Sept. 10, to Friday, Sept. 23, the intersection will be closed in all directions to pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles.
