Dean鈥檚 Downbeat: On creating beauty + mission-critical innovations
鈥淚f there鈥檚 a reason to have hope in a world of upheaval and unrest, it鈥檚 experiencing a young person openly and courageously sharing their musical gift, including their angst or protest against injustices of all kinds. Beauty lies in their inimitable expression of their truth through music in a range of settings not limited to the concert hall. Beauty underpins our universal musician mission, for music majors and non-majors alike. Beauty is why we do what we do.

听

鈥淚n my role as dean, my true purpose is to facilitate and empower our students and faculty to achieve their highest, noblest aspirations of beauty鈥攆rom ensuring our faculty have what they need to best advise, mentor and inspire our students; to eliminating what might stand in the way of our students鈥� success and experiencing music in whatever form they seek; to supporting our staff who work so diligently in carrying out our mission on behalf of our entire College of Music community. In that spirit鈥攁mong other efforts underway to more effectively advance students pursuing music as a vocation as well as students interested in music as an active avocation鈥擨鈥檓 excited about mission-driven revisions to our Bachelor of Arts in Music degree.鈥� MORE

Noteworthy

Congratulations to Jude Dow-Hygelund, winner of the state competition of the three-tiered Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Young Artist Piano Division! Next, the College of Music sophomore piano major鈥攁 student of Professor of Piano Andrew Cooperstock鈥攚ill represent Colorado at the 2023-2024 West Central Division Competition.
The College of Music鈥檚 saxophone studio also achieved great success in the recent MTNA Young Artist Woodwind Competition: Congratulations to Assistant Professor of Saxophone Nathan Mertens and his students鈥擟arter DeSouza, Joel Ferst and Ian Gunnarschja!听MORE
Teaching Professor Peter Cooper was recently in Germany conducting master classes in Berlin, Stuttgart and Leipzig鈥攎ade possible, in part, by the Dr. C.W. Bixler Family Foundation Faculty Initiatives Fund. 鈥淚 taught 13 hours of master classes for 29 students from 16 countries,鈥澨齭ays Cooper, who鈥檚 also principal oboist of the Colorado Symphony. 鈥淚t was an incredible cross-cultural experience for me and the students.鈥�
In Dean Birkenkamp鈥檚 book 鈥淭he Many Worlds of David Amram: Renaissance Man of American Music鈥� (2024), Hugh Ragin鈥擟ollege of Music jazz studies lecturer鈥攃ontributed the essay 鈥淣ow is the Time as Creative Manifestation of Consciousness鈥� (Chapter 22).

Coinciding with the 20^th year of the College of Music鈥檚 collaborative piano program, we鈥檙e thrilled to welcome pianist Anne Epperson for a four-day residency, including a public master class on Monday, Oct. 30, 4:30-6:30 p.m. (S102)! Currently professor of music in collaborative piano and chair of the Jacobs School of Music Chamber and Collaborative Music Department at Indiana University Bloomington, Epperson created and developed the collaborative piano program here at CU 麻豆影院 in 2004.
(Sharps & Flatirons): Join us for this weekend鈥檚 performances of 鈥渙ne of the greatest Italian ensemble operas.鈥�
