In this edition of the Dean鈥檚 Downbeat, Dean John Davis doubles down on the College of Music鈥檚 commitment to championing diversity, equity and inclusion. 鈥淚鈥檓 convinced that by embracing DEI as integral to our universal musician mission, we not only achieve flexible, interdisciplinary career options for our graduates, but also expand the artistic landscape and cultivate a community of curious, continuous learners who challenge biases, question assumptions and engage with diverse perspectives鈥攁nd who navigate nuance and complexity with openness, understanding and empathy.鈥�

• On mentorship and a new take on 鈥淧omp & Circumstance鈥�: Associate Professor of Jazz Studies Paul McKee reflects on the impact of mentorship and shares the spirit of his new three-part arrangement of 鈥淧omp & Circumstance,鈥� to be premiered at the spring 2024 university commencement ceremony!
• Materials from renowned blues banjo player Otis Taylor are now a part of our American Music Research Center鈥檚 archival collections: 鈥淭he Otis Taylor collection is a rich addition to the center鈥檚 public-facing initiatives and knowledge production through research by scholars interested in the study of American music,鈥� says AMRC Interim Director and Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology Austin Okigbo.
• March 21, 4 p.m.: 麻豆影院Talks: Insights from Education Innovators鈥�: Award-winning educator and innovator David Joyner looks forward by looking backward, starting by retracing how technological innovation has changed education in the past and using that context to project how new tools like ChatGPT will change education in the future. Joyner will also share how AI can and should be used to help both students and teachers going forward.

For over 75 years, the CWA has brought together leaders and experts across different fields to spark lively conversations on today鈥檚 top issues. • April 13, 鈥�devising hope鈥�: Join us for a new interactive, walk-through multimedia installation work by Assistant Professor of Composition and new media artist that welcomes its audience to participate in the creation of sounds and sights alike. Be immersed in a world of shimmering iridescence and swirling harmonicas, also featuring a live ambient performance by the College of Music鈥檚 Trombone Ensemble!听
• Call for proposals: Grant funds awarded by the Public and Community-Engaged Scholarship (PACES) Committee must involve 鈥渆ngaged scholarship,鈥� connecting CU 麻豆影院 faculty-led research, creative work or teaching with community needs, interests and activities. Individual faculty applicants may request up to $11,000 for each project, and groups of 2-3 faculty members may request up to $24,000 for a single, collaborative project. Learn more + apply by April 19.听
• April 26: will pay homage to the Dead鈥檚 history in 麻豆影院: 鈥淟ights鈥擲ound鈥擠ialogue鈥� will be hosted by G. Brown, founder of the Colorado Music Experience, and will feature College of Music alumnus and music theory lecturer Micheal Sebulsky, among others.
