Jay Keister, Associate Professor, is an Ethnomusicologist and scholar of JapaneseÌýmusic.ÌýKeister received the MA and PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University ofÌýCalifornia, Los Angeles. His research concerns individual agency in music, embodimentÌýof music traditions, aesthetics of music and traditional social structures in contemporaryÌýmusical practice.Ìý
His bookÌýShaped By Japanese MusicÌý(2004 NY: Routledge) is the resultÌýof his research on traditional performance practice in contemporary Japan and his trainingÌýin Japanese strings, flutes and percussion. He has published articles on Japanese musicÌýin the journals Ethnomusicology, Asian Music, The World of Music and on JapaneseÌýdance in Asian Theatre Journal.Ìý
He also co-authored an article on progressive rock in theÌýjournal Popular Music.
