Ian Bousfield, one of the world鈥檚 top trombonists, will perform at the CU-麻豆影院 College of Music Jan. 22 as part of a three-day residency through the James and Rebecca听Roser听Visiting Artist Program.听

鈥淚an Bousfield is simply one of the most remarkable trombonists in the world,鈥 says听William J. Stanley, associate professor of trombone and chair of the brass/percussion department at CU-麻豆影院. 鈥淲e are honored to have him.鈥澨

In 1979, when he was just 15, Bousfield won the prestigious Shell London Symphony Orchestra scholarship and he joined the European Youth Orchestra at 16听

He later enjoyed a 12-year career with the London Symphony Orchestra, where he was a featured soloist and recorded soundtracks to numerous films, including 鈥淪tar Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace鈥 and 鈥淏raveheart.鈥 In 2000, he became principal trombone of the Vienna Philharmonic/Vienna State Opera, still the only British member in the orchestra鈥檚 history.

As a soloist, Bousfield also has performed with the London Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, Halle Orchestra, Sapporo Symphony and Austin Symphony. Highlights of his solo career include performing the Nina Rota听Concerto听with the Vienna Philharmonic and Riccardo Muti three times in Vienna, as well as in The Lucerne Festival and in Tokyo, and giving the world premiere of Jonathan Dove鈥檚听Stargazer, written for and dedicated to him, with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Bousfield is currently professor of trombone at the Hochschule der K眉nste in Bern, Switzerland, holds an honorary membership with the Royal Academy of Music in London and is International Fellow of Brass at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

The program for the Jan. 22 concert, with accompaniment by Margaret McDonald on piano, will include: Grondahl 鈥斕Concerto; Hindemith 鈥斕Trauermusik; Starr 鈥斕Panic and Irony听(unaccompanied); Korngold 鈥斕Tanzlied des Pierrots听and听Marietta's Lied; Peaslee 鈥斕Arrows of Time; and Pryor 鈥 Petite Suzanne,听O Dry Those Tears听and听Blue Bells of Scotland.
