Here鈥檚 the kind of musician 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition winner Vadym Kholodenko is: Dissatisfied with cadenzas he鈥檇 heard to the first movement of Mozart鈥檚 Piano Concerto No. 21 in C, he decided he鈥檇 write one himself.
鈥淲hile I had a flight to Dallas (for the competition), I just wrote the cadenza in nine hours,鈥 he says. 鈥淎fterwards I made some alterations and changes and so on, but the main canvas was written in the airplane.鈥澨
The native of Ukraine and 14thwinner of the quadrennial Van Cliburn competition 鈥 whose winners are justly considered the finest pianists on earth 鈥 will bring that same spirit of virtuosity and creativity to Macky Auditorium on Nov. 8 when he plays as part of the Artist Series.听
鈥淲hat a superb choice he is to keep the torch of Cliburn鈥檚 memory burning,鈥 says the Star-Telegram of Fort Worth, Texas, home of the competition.
For the competition, Kholodenko played Liszt鈥檚 鈥淭ranscendental Etudes,鈥 Stravinsky鈥檚 鈥淭hree Movements from Petroushka鈥 and the Mozart concerto, among other pieces.听
Among the pieces on Kholodenko鈥檚 Artist Series program are: Rachmaninov鈥檚 鈥淪onata No. 1 in D Minor, op. 28鈥 and 鈥淧olka de V.R.鈥; Rachmaninov鈥檚 transcriptions of Bach鈥檚 鈥淪uite from the Partita in E Major for Violin,鈥 Schubert鈥檚 鈥淲ohin,鈥 Mendelssohn鈥檚 鈥淪cherzo鈥 from 鈥淎 Midsummer Night鈥檚 Dream,鈥 Tchaikovky鈥檚 鈥淟ullaby, op. 16, no. 1鈥 and Kriesler鈥檚 鈥淟iebesleid鈥 and 鈥淟iebesfreud.鈥澨
Kholodenko won first prize at both the International Schubert Competition in 2012 and the Sendai International Music Competition in 2010. He has worked with Yuri Bashmet, Vladimir Spivakov and other distinguished conductors, and has performed around the world, from Europe to Japan, Israel and the United States. In 2009 he released recordings of Liszt, Rachmaninov and Medtner and has recorded a CD with violinist Alena Baeva. Born in Kiev, he now lives in Moscow.
