Improving Sustainability within the HOA Industry
Partner: CAP Management
Group Members: Kalie Fallon, Andy Geleske, Spencer King, Kayla Zacharias
There are approximately 4,500 individual homeowners’ associations (HOAs) and condo associations in the Denver metro area. Historically, HOAs have not been thought of in the context of urban sustainability, but there is great opportunity to leverage the existing governing framework as a tool for community-scale sustainability initiatives. This form of community-scale governance has a significant amount of influence on sustainability issues, such as energy efficiency of buildings, waste management, and water efficiency. The main goal of this project is to develop a guidebook of sustainability recommendations for homeowners’ associations.
The capstone team members will serve as advisors for community associations’ sustainability committees, and assist residents with research, analysis, and recommendations; provide support for CAP Management’s sustainability projects regarding analysis, planning, auditing, and strategy; provide support for the recently created HOA Industry Sustainability Committee; assist in the development of guidebooks via research, writing, conducting focus groups, and interviews; research successful sustainability initiatives in the HOA industry; and enhance CAP Management’s image in regards to sustainability with social media, blog posts, website updates, and in-person events and seminars.
