This track explores the relationship between language and mind.聽聽Students will learn about the meanings and functions of language, the ways in which language is produced and comprehended, how it is acquired by learners, and the relationship between language and thought in different cultures.聽聽The track provides undergraduate students with interdisciplinary training in theories and methods from cognitive linguistics, language acquisition, computer science, cognitive anthropology, psychology, and speech, language, and hearing sciences.

Requirements

The current linguistics major (general track) requires 15 credits of LING electives (9 at the upper division level).聽聽Students declaring the Language and Cognition sub-plan will also complete 15 credits of LING electives (9 at the upper division level); however, they must select 12 of these credits from the set of cognition-relevant courses below.聽聽For the remaining 3 elective credits, students can choose any LING course that is applicable to the general LING track.
