Cannabidiol Mood Experiences Study

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a molecule that naturally occurs in plants such as hemp and marijuana. Unlike some of the other molecules that can be found in marijuana, CBD does not produce the feeling of being 鈥渉igh鈥 and is not considered an addictive substance.

CBD products are being marketed to consumers to promote wellness in many areas including emotional health. But, few research studies have explored commercial CBD use in people with different kinds of mood experiences, or collected information about CBD and wellbeing over time. The goal of the CBDX study is to address these gaps.

We are recruiting young adults ages 18 to 35 who are interested in taking edible hemp-based CBD supplements for a period of about six to eight weeks. One group that we recruit will include people who have depression. The other group will consist of people who have never had any diagnosed mental disorder. When you join the study, we will give you information about sources of CBD supplements, and a recommended schedule for you to take the supplements.

The study includes a series of four research sessions conducted at our laboratory facilities, each of which last about four hours. At each session, you will talk with one of our trained research staff about your life experiences, perform a set of computer games that test stress coping and learning, and complete a neuroimaging scan. We will also collect a small amount of blood with a blood draw. At the end of the eight-week study period, you will complete a telephone interview to wrap up and tell us about your mood.

All participants are compensated for their time, and all participants may choose to withdraw from the study at any time.
