Elias SacksElias Sacks, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies and Director of Graduate Studies for the Program in Jewish Studies, recently published two articles on Moses Mendelssohn, a leading Enlightenment philosopher generally听seen as the founder of modern Jewish theology. 听The first article 鈥 "Anarchy听and Law:听Mendelssohn听on Philosophy and Judaism"听鈥斕齛ppears in a new collection of essays entitled听听(University Press of Maryland, 2016), and explores Mendelssohn鈥檚 views on the听relationship between Judaism, philosophy, and science.听听The second article听鈥斕"Civic听Freedom out of the Sources of Judaism: Mendelssohn, Maimonides, and Law鈥檚听Promise鈥澨斕齛ppears听in the most recent issue of the听, and explores听Mendelssohn鈥檚 engagement with medieval Judaism and relevance for contemporary democratic thought. 听
In February 2016, Professor Sacks also gave a talk at Indiana University Bloomington entitled听"Hebrew Philosophy Between East and West:听Mendelssohn, Krochmal, and Jewish Modernity,鈥澨齛nd in听January 2016, he听served as the co-chair of听the annual meeting of the Society of Jewish Ethics, held听concurrently with the annual meetings of the Society of Christian Ethics and the Society for the Study of Muslim Ethics.
