Join Us for "Anxiety of the Only" with Dr. Angela Neal-Barnett
Ever felt like you're the only one in the room who looks like you, thinks like you, or feels like you? Ìý
Being the "only" can be tough, but it can also be a source of incredible strength. On October 16, 2024, at 4:30 pm MT in the CASE Auditorium, CU Â鶹ӰԺ is excited to host Dr. Angela Neal-Barnett for an enlightening talk titled "Anxiety of the Only."
Dr. Neal-Barnett is not just any psychologist—she's an award-winning expert on anxiety among African Americans and the author of the groundbreaking book Soothe Your Nerves. With a career dedicated to researching anxiety disorders in African American communities, especially among Black girls, she brings a wealth of knowledge and a passionate voice to the conversation about mental health and inclusivity.
In her own words, Dr. Neal-Barnett shares, "Being the 'only' in the workplace—the only woman, the only person of color, the only one openly suffering from a mental or physical illness—can contribute to existing mental health issues. At the same time, bringing your whole self to work...can be a huge strength in academia."
Her work at the Program for Research on Anxiety Disorders among African Americans (PRADAA) focuses on real-world impacts and meaningful change. From tackling issues like trichotillomania to addressing the well-being of African American female adolescents, her research is not just relevant—it's revolutionary.
This event isn't just a lecture; it's a call to action. It's about understanding the unique challenges faced by those who are the "only" and exploring how we can all contribute to a more inclusive and supportive environment.
Don't miss this opportunity to gain valuable insights and be part of an important dialogue.
