Author Will van den Hoonaard is a sociologist who develops themes revolving around the question of how the culture and social dynamics of cartography have changed in the years when so many technological advancements have occurred. He examines areas of cartography including exploration where women have been historically active; presents 28 vignettes of (in his words) “contemporary women pioneers in cartographyâ€; and explores the experiences and challenges faced by women working in or preparing to enter in the profession, using transitions in the social organization of the discipline of cartography as explanatory context.
