Let Us Visit You

In addition to hosting groups at Fiske Planetarium on the UC 麻豆影院 campus, we are also able to bring our portable planetarium dome and traveling activities to schools or other venues.

Typically, our outreach programs work best in 30 minute blocks, but we are able to adapt most activities to longer or shorter times. Contact us and we鈥檇 be happy to work with you to modify or develop an activity to fit your needs.

Popular Outreach Programs

Fiske MiniDome

The dome is 16' x 16' x 11' high, so a large room with an electrical outlet is necessary. Gyms or cafeterias are often good places for the dome. (We will not set the dome up outdoors.) Our MiniDome seats approximately 25 people at a time.

  • Tour of the Night Sky (Age recommendation 5+; grades K+)
  • Tour of the Solar System (Age recommendation 听7+; grades 2+)
  • Reason for the Seasons (Age recommendation 听9+; grades 4+)
  • Moon Phases (Age recommendation 听9+; grades 4+)
  • Tour of the Universe (Age recommendation 听11+; grades 6+)听
Meteorites

Can you tell the difference between a meteorite from space and a 鈥渕eteor-wrong鈥 from Earth? In this demonstration, we explore where meteorites come from, what they鈥檙e made of, how they end up on Earth, and why they are important for astronomers to study. Learn some of the techniques scientists use to tell the difference between a rock that came from space and an ordinary Earth rock, then see if you can figure out which of our rocks are true meteorites and which are imposters!

Age recommendation 7+; demonstration can accommodate up to 30 participants at a time.

Stomp Rockets

3鈥2鈥1鈥lastoff! What different elements does a rocket need in order to fly? Learn about sounding rockets, which do not go into space yet are still incredibly useful for astronomers. Construct and decorate your own paper rocket, then launch it with a blast of air!

Age recommendation 4 - 14; lab can accommodate up to 30 participants at a time.

Kinesthetic Astronomy

Learn about astronomy by representing objects in the solar system with your body! Spin around as the Earth and hold a "moon ball" to explore the phases of the moon, walk out the scaled distances and sizes of the various planets, or represent the planets in their orbit around the sun. These activities will get you up and moving!

Age recommendation 5+; activity can accommodate up to 30 participants at a time.

Telescope Observing Programs

Solar Observing (daytime)

How do astronomers study our Sun?听Learn about different types of telescopes and techniques astronomers use to study the cosmos, including our star, the Sun! Then, get a chance to safely observe the Sun for yourself using a solar telescope, Sunspotter, and Solar glasses.

Age recommendation 6+; activity can accommodate up to 30 students at a time.

Star Party (nighttime)

Interested in a night sky tour and looking at the moon, planets, and star clusters through telescopes? If you have an outdoor location in mind, we work with our partners at the Sommers-Bausch Observatory to bring the experience to you!

Age recommendation 6+; activity can accommodate up to 30 students at a time.

Other Outreach Programs

Q&A with an Astronomer

Curious to have a Q&A session with a University of Colorado graduate student researcher who studies astronomy? We鈥檙e happy to help find someone to come visit you! The Q&A session can also be paired with a short overview of what your visiting astronomer studies.

Age recommendation 9+; activity can accommodate up to 50 people at a time.
